Dunno if necessary, but *SPOILER !*

No big secret that the whole subchapter involving the wipe-out of the White Faces, Calfat, Hetan, etc. is pretty shocking & not quite clear (yet ?) what the point is...- but by now I am used to SE loving to mindf*ck us all whenever he can ( that is one of thrills of this cycle, after all).
In this sense, did anybody notice that very, very short phrase (4 words) on page 600, where it is said that the Snake still holds the soul of Hetan ?

Hmm...- will The Man actually spring a Hetan comeback on all of us ? I mean...Tool could use a little straightening out from his undead butchering ways, now couldn't he ?
Who better than our favorite power girl to do that, in whatever physical manifestation that may be ?

Could be.

For some reason I was under the impression that Tool and his followers were on the way to kill the children of the snake (was there some quote about them becoming slayers of children once more, or something? though that could mean humans in general I guess). Hetan's soul could maybe stop him?

And yeah, that story line was very dark and depressing, and left me wondering what its purpose was (not that I don't think it has one, I just am not sure what it is).

I noticed that Bedalle was present at Hetans death. Have a look here for more

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Aah, OK. Exactly that. I imagined there would be a prior comment. Thx !

Still have got this feeling SE is going to bring her back somehow...

I am counting on the *Redmask* factor => seemingly pointless in RG, very clear in DoD. Hope he does the same re the White Faces in TCG...

Just no ressurection! Death of Hetan was perfect "eriksonism" and mirror of society devouring itself. There is not needed some "higher purpose", just peoples are bitches...

Hetan's husband and children are alive so far. A God, i.e. Mael can erase the memories. She would need really High denul for her feet. I keep the possiblility of her return as a maybe. Hope so. Think the character deserved better.

Sheīs dead, even High Denul canīt pass it. Well, they can send her to refugium to live with Onrackīs children (so happy family), but I think that she simply didnīt make it. Thats IMHO strong point of this storyline. She was proud, awesome... and got devastate by her own kind, family... to the point of deepest state of mind. Just like that...easily, so frakin easily... phew, it sent me to depression for few days and I bow to SE...

And I realize, yes, her death and suffering got its purpose. Toolan leads bunch of unbound Imass, is angry like and overthrown pacifist and First sword could be and is going to kill od genocide... we do not know who, bcause his barghast job was done by Draconus.

Yep, pretty sure she's gone, despite Bedalle's comments.

Anyway, what the White Faces did to Tool and Hetan took away any sympathy for them and their demise.

Draconus' return - best entrance yet?!
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Draconus wiped out all the barghast except the Senan who left the field of battle before he showed up and the Gilk who were under the employ of the Queen and her Evertine Legion.

The Senan were subsequently wiped out by Tool and his rogue T'lan Imass.

Now only the Gilk remain, employed by with the Queen, the Persish and whatever is left of the Letherii, the Burned Tears and the Bonehunters.

You know, I think we underestimated just how powerful Draconus was. He froze two huge fucking armies, did the whole storm-and-lightning-bolts entrance...he's one scary dude.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

I think the purpose of the Hetan and Barghast storyline was to end up with a bunch of rogue T'lan Imass wandering about lead by a furious and vengeful First Sword. Possibly to thwart Olar Ethil's plans, possibly not. And Silverfox will be up to something in the final book, won't she? Rogue Imass should make it more interesting.

I have to say that I will be surprised if we see Silverfox in the last book as I thought they were all heading off to Assail, but then again what do I know about it? SE likes to confound us at every turn and we could see all sorts of people in there for whom I thought their plot line had been concluded in this ten book series.

I'll snog Broody if Silverfox is in the last book, that's how confident I'm feeling about that storyline being done over and done my dears.

I'm somewhat inclined to agree with the good Dr on the purpose of the Hetan storyline, whilst I found the whole concept of what happened with Tool several levels beyond ludicrous, not to mention utterly inconsistent with the character and deeply illogical, it seems he wanted to set that up.

However, it was also a manner of demonstrating yet more heartbreaking futility which he is so fond of. At the weekend I was having a discussion which went along the lines of, SE has said he wants to mess with fantasy tropes and our expecations, but he's doing it so often, so consistently that he's actually becoming predicatable in his reversal of expectations, I think this storyline really tipped the balance for me.

ah the rarely seen but always mind-blowing double expecto-reversi! only a very few people have been able to pull that off without tearing the universe in twain
