Quote

Mark is a young Winnnipeg goalie whose life unfolds between hockey periods. He idolizes his older brother Jack, a tattoed Adonis with perfection in his blood, and together they idolize the Winnipeg Jets. After the team abandons Winnipeg, the disillusioned brothers leave Canada for England so that Mark can try out for the minor-league Cardiff Devils. In true Canadian fashion, they embark on a canoe trip from Edinburgh to Cardiff, portaging through London with their rented 17-footer.

As the journey progresses, Mark and Jack struggle to understand the loss of the Jets and their rage at those who let their team slip away. Mark's love for the game is deeply entwined with his love for his girlfriend, his family, his city, and his country. His odyssey of self-discovery is portrayed in a style sometimes angry, sometimes funny, but always engaging.

When She's Gone lays bare the glory and the tragedy that is hockey in Canada. It is an indictment on the poisoning influence of money, the theft of our national pastime and the demise of the Winnipeg Jets. But it is also a tribute to the dream of putting silver blades to white ice, and challenges our preconceived notions of heroes and icons, daring us to believe in the simple love of the game.

Awesome book. Originally published by Great Plains Fiction (my copy is nicer-looking than the picture above, which comes from Amazon.com), it may be difficult to acquire but it's definitely worth it.

As far as I remember the Canadian cover has SE's face on the fallen hockey player... plus there is a rather raunchy sex scene... not that I skimmed through the book only for that :(

That may be one of the most gadawful covers I've ever seen.

Wow.

Hockey's that important to Steve?

I love the guy on the far left who has all black eyes, as if he is a demon from the Supernatural universe.

He was living in Winnipeg when the WHA merged with the NHL and the Jets were sold to Phoenix, it is something that he lived through. I can imagine that when writing a book about it, he wanted to represent his own thoughts and feelings, ie. the central figure wearing the Jets jersey.
