I joined a new renewable energy forum today at my fave aussie renewable energy retailer's website link and found that they had an entire subforum for introducing yourself. Stupid, I thought, and started a "New member introduction thread" only to get it edited and a PM in my inbox reading:

Quote

Thanks for joining the community. I just wanted to let you know that I edited your first post - we'd like for folks to start a new thread as an introduction each time as we're finding that's often generating conversation about their particular circumstance or system :D

We look forward to your ongoing participation :D

I was rather shocked and offended, but managed to keep my reply polite:

Quote

No worries, I just thought you may find that as the community grows this will quickly become unsustainable and will actually discourage discussion as it is hard enough to read through dozens of "hi everybody" threads, let alone reply to them all. Indeed I've noticed already that there are no more than 1 or 2 replies to each thread.

I guess I felt strange beginning a new thread just to say hi, I've got nothing special to share about myself. I probably should have asked though, no harm intended.

I feel like crawling back under the warm malazan covers and never going out again.

You should have Goatse'd him. That would teach him.

Generally the forum seems very focused and not really about "off topic" input or social circles.

I was somewhat disappointed when I clicked the "Solar PV in the blue Mts, NSW" thread and it wasn't a Not Safe for Work thread about some little hot renewable energy chick in nothing but a pair of blue mittens. Too early for such seriousness.

Yeah, my excitement about a good place to discuss and learn about renewable energy and global warming has been completely shut down, it's going to be completely over administrated and fucked by constant self congratulating and shameless plugs. This will not become a community. Sad.

There is a New Users forum at Theoryland (my WoT forum). Generally there is a good deal of welcome for each person, but it's also become the denizen of the particularly ADD and not-book-discussing or even serious-off-topic-discussing folks. Most of them do little beyond hijacking noob threads with some crazy stuff about poisoned cookies and setting people on fire and eating fish...and chatting. They're an alright bunch, though. They scare away the people who can't handle being invited to the soap box and then ignored. Very often we get members who skip the noob board altogether and just post on the book discussion forums, and they're alright too. You don't get a PM from a bored mod about doing that.

Yeah I didn't even find the new member thread here until I'd been posting for a few weeks. But as a new forum, it was where the most traffic was on this other one.

Fucking retarded tho. All the replies to the threads are from this guy who PMed me saying welcome. That's it, one reply, from the admin. How the fuck is that "we're finding that's often generating conversation about their particular circumstance or system"?

Twat needs a real job.

Maybe he meant that the information revealed in the new thread came into other threads?

I once joined a forum with a micro-managing admin. I didn't stay long (and the forum stats showed that most people didn't).

I used to be on other forums but they weren't half as much fun, and don't bother any more...

You should check out the offtopic section of a little known forum called 4chan.org. They are in to all that religion stuff and would welcome you as a brother. Trust me on this, Tiste.

There's also this link I posted in the Awesome quotes thread:

http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/

It's a forum for people who like to bbq and smoke meat. Seriously.

18,000 members discussing a long list of different types of meat and how to make them as delicious as possible.

If I had a backyard and a BBQ grill of my own I would post no where else but on that forum. Probably.

There's also a logic to this forum that makes it approachable - each bo0ok has a subforum. finish a book, move up the chain. Many other genre lit forums seem to glomp everything into one spoiler ladden mess which, if you are enjoying a series, is offputting.

Plus, the admins here rawk.

Yeah, it's a little known fact but the moderators actually have their own HAWT GIRLS thread sainthood, and that is why they removed the Girls thread from the Inn... Jealousy to save us from ourselves!

I've obviously missed out on the Bird Watching thread...
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I wish you weren't being sarcastic. It's a good little forum if you ever want an on-the-side WoT one to check occasionally as the last three books come out. :) We have off-the-wall WoT discussions, but we have good ideas I think.

This was first forum I ever joined.

After I joined a few other ones.
They sucked.
I mean they really sucked.
Except one other, but it was a private forum of friends.

Joined a few others over the years out of need (school and such), they were all terrible.
One of the last ones I was on I almost became their spam god, bunch of over sheltered children who don't know the internet.
I could have destroyed that forum.
And I should have.
