Kruppe: Brilliant or just plain annoying?

Ive started this thread because of how much the character of kruppe seriously frustrates me. His long ramblings make me want to seriously punch him in the face especially when he seems to make no sense whatsoever. Yet his moments of genius always seem to shine through at the right time and he redeems himself e.g in GOTm when you find out he's been supplying the info to that Mage/alchemy dude (forget his name). But then again the first time you meet him in MOI he rambles again ive even just skipped over his talks when reading the book because i know that its only going to frustrate me but go back to them after because i remind myself that he may say something important.
So...
Does anyone else get the feeling that he may just be the most genius of all the characters or only gives the perception of knowing almost all?

There are many threads devoted to discussion of the estimable Kruppe. All I can say is read on as he will continue to frustrate you with his rambling soliloquies before blinding you with his brilliance. It is, after all, part of his charm.

Not to put you off, but beware... not liking Kruppe will seriously hamper your enjoyment of a later Malazan book. I can say little else without spoilers
Personally, I think he adds much needed levity in the otherwise grim proceedings in MOI

I kinda agree with LG. if you took away 50% of Kruppe's banter i would've been much happier.
I don't dislike his character by any means, just get a bit impatient waiting for hime to get to the point. Which is maybe the whole point?

I enjoy his ramblings to be honest. It makes your mind race with all the possible future events you can gleam out of his words.

I agree, I love Kruppe. I find his ramblings much more amusing that Pust's. As his are just self-gratification. Kruppe's are mines of treasure if you bother to sift through them.

Thirded. Kruppe's "voice" was the thing about TtH I loved the most.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I don't like him all that much, but I didn't mind reading his voicing... once. On any re-reads I tend to surf through his long-windedness now that I know where he says important things and where he goes on aimlessly.

I dont dislike kruppe all the time just when he has nothing relevant to say and keeps rambling on like i said its just really frustrating. But i do like it when he comes out with unexpected genius and everyones stunned

Point being, Kruppe never just "has nothing relevant to say" or "rambl[es] on." His scenes are always important, and that is easily seen upon re-reads. Kruppe's POV is one of 2 that I think most closely follow that of S.E. himself.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Gotta say i hadn't spotted that, HD. I'll take more notice next time round.
Personally i prefer Pust over Kruppe, just because his seemingly insane ramblings make me laugh. Oh and his mule is great too.

Obviously if im missing something then i apologise but im pretty sure i havent

Itkovian, who lets face it was a pretty perceptive chap and has somewhat unique abilities as Shield Anvil, ponders at the big pow wow outside of Capustan in MOI.....
Quote
Itkovian's attention was drawn to the short, fat Daru, for some reason that he could not have hoped to explain. A benign smile curved those full, slightly greasy lips.
This is a most fell gathering of powers here. Yet why do I believe that the very epicentre of efficacy lies with this strange little man ? He even holds Krul's regard, as would an admiring companion rest eyes upon a lifelong....prodigy of sorts, perhaps. A prodigy whose talents have come to overwhelm his master's. But there is no envy in that regard, nor even pride - which always whispers of possessiveness, after all. No the emotion is far more subtle and complex...

I love Kruppe and I think whilst the above quote is slightly ambiguous in many regards, I find it very interesting that SE chose Itkovian to narrate it.
Yes he's a bit of a wordsmith and can ramble on a bit ( sometimes to the detriment of the book's pace ), however he is a fundamental protagonist of the series and as such cannot be ignored. I too have gleamed little gems of info from re-reads with Kruppe and am interested in how his character will play out.
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.

I agree on a reread Kruppes ramblings, and the little hints of EVERYTHING dropped within it makes me picture Erikson cross references his books and charactesr with a giant spread sheet / Access database
I'm a huge fan of Kruppe, mostly, through his ultimate sorrow for pain and suffering (between the lines) and using his abilities to minimize such.

Surely if that were the case, the timeline would make more sense...

No...he uses notes, like most authors.

I agree with you. It is really one (of many) unusual features of this series - probably a lot of authors would introduce this kind of character just for entartainment, but Kruppe is one of the main and serious protagonists, in spite of his behaviour. There are one of two paragraphs in MoI I would cut out, but no more. And perhaps if I re-read them, I'll find they are in fact important!

Kruppe provides the intelligent and humor-filled side of these novels. Without him, SE might as well have written a series of novels very similiar to Salvatore's. In essence, Kruppe makes SE unique in the way that he is not the hopeful warrior-boy looking for adventure or the cynical arch-villian type. He is a complex, rotund man with a obsession with food, pastries in particular, and a mind which can grasp a level of information beyond all of the characters, excpet perhaps for the gods and ascedants. Even then it is a very close second. To wind it all down, when Kruppe makes an observation, remember it for future events.
