I went to upgrade the joomla installation on my webspace. simple, no?
Well seeing a load of instructions, realising I was several editions behind I decided to wipe the whole damned thing and install the latest edition (1.5 something)
The intrustions are simple enough, download the zip, upload the files, then go to the root directory.
and apparently it should be all good from there.

It simply is not good in any shape or form.
initially the problem was "you need to delete installation directory before proceeding" (WTF? delete installation before installation?) tried that, nope.
so deleted everything again
uploaded all the files again
nope, pure whitescreen this time.

anyone have any experience installing this shit?

(im trying now to just upload the zip file and extract it in the directory)

Sounds like the program needs to create and install itself to a directory.

So if you have a directory called 'joomla' or w/e you call it, you need to delete it and allow the installation program to create it.

Of course I have no clue what Joomla is.

bah.

the helpful help says to unpack.
upload files
go to root (www.mydomain.com)
initially it was giving me bullshit about deleteing the install directory.
now its jsut whitescreening.
there an install.php file,l try going www.mydomain.com/install.php it gives me some restricted access bullshit. check permissions, 777, all writeable.
tempers going to be shot very soon

Well, first of all, you should have just used an upgrade. Much simpler.

Secondly, the installation process should be simple in and of itself. Extract the zip archive to a location on your computer (take C:/Joomla, as an example).
Using your FTP program of choice, log into your FTP account. Navigate to the files you want to upload (C:/Joomla), select, and hit the upload button.

It should not cause you issues. The files should all be in the root directory, unless you want to put it in a separate location.

I assume you have read the documentation? and that you understand it.
If you continue to have problems, I can do it for you...but that would require you to give me FTP access...which I know is a big thing. Anyway, once you've uploaded stuff to your site, just visiting the site should start the installation process. *shrug*

Hit it over to me, I'll see what I can do.

Not now, though, in about 9 hours. Going to crash first. XD

Are you sure that you're installing the right thing? Like perhaps you are trying to install the update instead of the whole program?
