Can I just say that Elrond talking of Glamdring (in one of the 4 alternate trailer endings) and how it was the sword of the King of Gondolin made the SILMARILLION-fan in me squeal with fanboy delight?

I think that trailer is genuinely dreadful. Why does it seem like Peter Jackson's trying to make a companion piece to Clash of the Titans?

You're on crack PG.

The movie filmicly fits right in with the LOTR films.

Clash of the Titans?? Wut?

It seems far sloppier visually to me. The new locations don't look as good and the CGI on the monsters looks shonky (is it just me, or is there a lot more pure CG rather than the balance with practical effects in LotR?). Plus there's far too much focus on the bombastic for what I'd expect from the Hobbit.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Aye, some of the CGI is a bit sloppy but that is often the case in trailers. There is still an awful lot of production to be done before release and i would be shocked if it didn't look a lot better when the film comes out.

Indeed. Besides, this is WETA. they are cutting edge 24/7. They don't skimp.

But they don't always get it right. Especially when they do creatures in pure CG as opposed to mo-cap and mixing with practical effects - I've often found them a step down from Pixar (albeit Pixar have two advantages of being pure CGI and not having to meld with live action, and of not having to look photo-real in the same way so they can concentrate more on movement) and ILM in that respect. Take King Kong- there was a lot of stuff in it that was genuinely groundbreaking, especially Kong himself and New York, but the dinosaurs looked less convincing to me than the ones in Jurassic Park.

It may be unfair to mark them down for not being ILM. But that is the gold standard.

I do hope you're both right and it is just a case of unfinished effects. But given how much of a shambles the decision to go three films this late in the process is, I'm worried that's going to affect things.

All of that is blasphemy. Everything WETA has done has impressed me more than anything else out there.

The crack. You be smokin' it PG.

I know what you mean. Any mention of Gondolin has me pumped up. Its one of my favorite locations in Beleriand.

Advanced Tix went on sale today. There seems to be 10PM Dec 13th screenings, and then Dec 14th....and it's being offered in regular, 3D and HFR 3D (which is the notorious 48FPS version).

I'm SUPER curious about the HFR screening...but I think I'll go regular 3D first time to just enjoy the story and they hit up the HFR screening for a second watch later.

I'm already planning on seeing it multiple times. Once with my dad, because this is the kind of thing he would like. Once with my friend to convince her how awesome it is. And then once again when my best friend comes back from her exchange trip in Austria in januari.

I'm going to seriously enjoy this movie.Posted Image I might even consider watching it in 3D.

I saw The Two Towers at a midnight showing when it came out.....never....again..
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

'The Hobbit' Producers Sue 'Age of the Hobbits' Studio for Trademark Infringement (Exclusive)
6:10 PM PST 11/7/2012 by Matthew Belloni

The group behind the upcoming Peter Jackson-directed epic based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novel filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles today against the Global Asylum, makers of the other movie with "Hobbits" in the title. In the suit, a copy of which was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the studios seek to stop the use of the word "Hobbits" in association with the "knockoff" film and ask a court to order that all infringing ad materials and packaging be destroyed.

From the complaint:

"The Asylum has been and is promoting and advertising its low-budget film using the confusingly similar and misleading title Age of the Hobbits, in an intentional and willful attempt (i) to trade on the popularity and goodwill associated with the Tolkien novels, the extraordinarily successful Lord of The Rings film trilogy, and the famous HOBBIT mark, (ii) to free-ride on the worldwide advertising campaign in connection with the forthcoming Hobbit films, and (iii) to divert customers and potential customers away from the Hobbit films."

The move comes a few weeks after THR first reported that the Hobbit studios and The Zaentz Co., which controls trademark rights to the Tolkien book, threatened the Burbank-based Asylum, arguing that Age of the Hobbits violates the trademark in the protected phrase that has been associated with Bilbo Baggins and his fellow big-footed creatures since the book was first published in 1937.

The Asylum, known for its low-budget "mockbusters" that often trade on the hoopla surrounding major Hollywood releases, has set a Dec. 11 release date for its Hobbits movie, three days before the big-budget WB/New Line/MGM Hobbit opens in the U.S. The company has informed WB/New Line lawyers that it believes its movie is legal kosher because the "Hobbits" in the film aren't based on the Tolkien creations.

"Age of the Hobbits is about the real-life human subspecies, Homo Floresiensis, discovered in 2003 in Indonesia, which have been uniformly referred to as 'Hobbits' in the scientific community," a rep for The Asylum told THR in a statement when the legal dispute first erupted. "As such, the use of the term 'Hobbits' is protected under the legal doctrines of nominal and traditional fair use. Indeed, a simple Google search of Hobbits and archaeology reveals dozens of articles containing the term "Hobbit(s)" in the title."

The description of Age of the Hobbits from the Asylum website suggests a different storyline from the Tolkien classic but with just enough similarities to raise eyebrows.: “In an ancient age, the small, peace-loving Hobbits are enslaved by the Java Men, a race of flesh-eating dragon-riders. The young Hobbit Goben must join forces with their neighbor giants, the humans, to free his people and vanquish their enemies.”

In addition, Asylum included a disclaimer on the film's poster noting that the film is not about the Tolkien creature. The plaintiffs in the new lawsuit obviously don't believe that step is sufficient.

The plaintiffs are represented by Andrew Thomas, Farnaz Alemi and Kirsten Jackson at LA's Jenner & Block firm.

-----------------------------------------

Is that Christopher Judge from Stargate on the poster? Oh, ho - IMDB reveals that is IS! His career obviously took off.

So the theatre that we are going to see it in, has one theatre where you can choose and reserve seats...which is what my gf likes to do....but that theatre is showing it ONLY in 3D HFR...so that's how I'll be seeing it the first time.

Yay for no strobing and flickering on action shots.
