Yeah, they really do help. I don't know if I would have made it through the bbq without a ciggy if it weren't for that.

They're much cheaper - 42 capsules works out at around £20.00. I get through 1 capsule every 3 days or so.
And the patches are really cheap if you get your doctor to prescribe them :killingme: Mine gave us a couple of months worth for just the cost of the prescription (about £7.50)
- or are you not in the UK?

Congrats RLY, you have the will power to do this and we all believe in you! I assume you're doing great so far and you'll just keep on not smoking forever! And now you and Bubba can be turkey-buddies (is that a term or did I just make that up?) and quit together!

OK RLY, I'm gonna join you. I had my last one yesterday afternoon. I've been smoking on/off and trying to quit for a few years now. The longest I ever made it without a fag was about 2 years. I'm hoping that it will be easier to quit when I eventually move in with my non-smoking bf but I figure now's as good a time as any to quit (more because I can't afford it than for health reasons to be honest).

Good luck!! :killingme:

Best of luck RLY, I'm proud of you for wanting to quit! My grandfather and father both developed lung cancer after years and years of smoking. I lost my granfather to it, but fortunately my father is still here and no longer smoking. I've never smoked myself, but I know from friends and family that it can be a hell of a habit to kick. I'll definitely chek up on you and support you in this. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you, best of luck!

Good luck to Menandore as well! I hope both of you are successful in this venture!

Ok, so i smoked so much last night before I went to bed I gave myself nicotine poisoning. I almost threw up. But, I finished all my smokes before turning in, which was important to me. So now it's day one. I'm feeling ok, no real physical withdrawals right now, just a mental need to smoke. Oh wait, there's the nicotine headache. Sweet.

Good luck and positive thought waves to everyone attempting* giving up. It won't surprise you to know that I don't smoke, but the rest of my family do (parents, siblings not hubby) and I know how much they struggle.

*I am sure you will suceed so attempting is too negative a word!

'Do all Imass think about Mafia?'
'No. Few think at all.'
'Why is that?'
The Imass leaned his head to one side and regarded her. 'Because, Adjunct, they are sheeple.'

I quit "cold turkey" (I had a couple Quest "no-nicotine smokes day 3 and 4) after a pack to a pack and a half for 9 years. My advice?

1. Don't drink the first week. You will smoke.
2. Every time you get a massive urge, go do something physical to get your endorphins kicking.
3. Get something to occupy your hands and mouth. I used dum dum suckers.
4. Going to bed is going to be rough... I used sleeping pills.

I quit smoking after breaking up with a girlfriend of a year and going through law school finals. If a natural addict like me can quit, anybody can.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Hooser is very much right, I 'quit' after 5 years, but sometimes I have one when I am at happy hour, if I'm with someone I can bum one from.

Make sure you never, ever buy one, and stay away from the booze. It is really very hard to have a couple beers now without having a smoke, I couldn't have done it if I drank in the first little bit.

Hopefully Ms. RLY dosen't smoke, as that will fuck you up.

I have never been a smoker so all I have to fall back on is what my dad told me he did to quit before I was born. He said that he had tried several times and it wouldn't take. Finally he was going to marry my mom and decided to quit for good so he smoked a bunch and put them in ash trays around his place. He made sure that he had at least 6 buts and all of the ash in each tray. Then he put water into each tray. He stopped cold turkey and every time he got the urge to smoke he would go and grab a tray and grind it into his face. Which would promptly make him throw up. After 2 weeks of that if he was even in a room with someone who had just smoked a cig then he would throw up. He never smoked again.

During that 2 weeks he didn't go out at all. He went to work and home and that was it.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

Hardcore. As for the patch, gum, inhalers.... If they help you quit that's good. Many people, however, wind up addicted to the gum and still smoke. What you need to break is your physical addiction to nicotine. That is what has to be broken to successfully quit. Psychological, emotional, addictions will fade fast as soon as you break that urge. Everything is tied to that.

Edit: I'll just add that I still want to smoke. But, because I broke that urge I know how powerful it is. I had one puff on a cigarette like 3 months ago. It was like going home. At that point I knew I'd never be able to be one of those people who can quit and then just smoke occasionally. So... I'd put off experimentation for a while too if you go Cold Turkey.

So far so good. My head feels funny, I got into an imaginary argument when driving to the store by myself, and nearly threw a pineapple at the moron checking out my food. Other than that though, all good. i haven't even had a piece of gum yet, but I feel that might be coming soon.

I did treat myself to some Jack in the Box though. Comfort food ftw. Can't get into that habit though, or I'll balloon up.

It feels like my day is ruined, and all I need to do to fix it is smoke. I hate addiction. I refuse to cave though. I just really want to.

If you are already getting hit this hard you could be in trouble. You need to do something to take your mind off of it. Go to a movie or something. I didn't get close to giving in until day 2 or 3. The good thing is, if you can last about 2 weeks normally you are good to go from there on out.

Think of it this way: Your lungs are already healthier, your blood is circulating better. Your brain is start to shut down synapses. You just gotta keep going.

I've started now, it really doesn't matter how bad it gets, I'm not smoking again. It is annoying though how every 20 minutes I start to get up to head outside, then remember that I have no reason to go outside.

Just wait for your first long car drive. You'll be amazed!
