It doesn't say in the rules the leader has to survive. Just they have to kill the opposing leader and have a majority. If you are the spider, to win they would need to kill the leader of the team hunting you, and the target leader, and gain a majority.

For when one reads the role list and you come across Steal, if stealing actually means taking an ability off someone... then WIFOM starts again, for if one were to connect the dots from there, maybe you think/know that your leader has a day vig?
And if so, underscored part suggests that he was in a position to have used it, but that you weren't sure it was him. It's far fetched, but it is an interesting explanation for your potential slip.
