Just writing in to tell that I have read the first two books of the aforementioned Kamigawa trilogy by Scott McGough (consisting of Outlaw: Champions of Kamigawa, Heretic: Betrayers of Kamigawa and Guardian: Saviors of Kamigawa) and to tell you: don't bother. They're very bad. When

a bloodthirsty ogre and and some demons annihilate a wizard school and a dragon battles a huge spirit monster

and it just isn't exciting, you know you're reading something historically bad.

I have to agree on this. Shogun is a blast to read. Plays very loose with the actual events of the Anjin-san mind you. But a great read.

I loved the series.

there is Japanese series called the Guin saga written by Kaori Kurimoto the First five books of the series hve been translated and are really good fun.　The main character is a Leopard heded warrior who helps in the battles against the Mongaul armies that wihs to conquer the world. Definitely a series to check out hopefully some more parts will be translated soon as there are over a 100 books out in Japanese now.
