Rath'Fener and the hands quite confused

No matter how many times I read the scene with Itkovian cutting off the priest's hands I still did not have a clue what was going on, what it meant, and what it had to do with the scene from Deadhouse Gates (besides ripping Fener down into the mortal realm) Any one care to explain?

This is how i understand it all: for the priests of Fener the way they use or access their gods warren is though a key tattooed on their right hand which they hold to the sacred mark on their chest. When a priest is excommunicated (as Itkovian did to Rath'Fener) this involves cutting off their hands, and thus their connection to Fener. The hands are then sent to Fener's realm as a sign that the punishment has been carried out.
What happened to Heboric was done with out Fener's blessing, and because of that his hands where like poison to the god. When Baudin pressed Heboric's infected arm against his sacred mark that caused Fener to be cast out of his realm. That was never Baudin's intention, Heboric was dying and Baudin was trying to save him.
When Itkovian cut off Rath'Fener's hands Fener was no longer there anymore to take the hands, so another spirit or god took then and tried to process the priest.
Hope all that helps, i will give you page numbers if you need them.

Thanks for the reply. That helps quite a bit. But I have another question as to why the other people there were begging Itkovian not to do it like it wasn't sanctioned or something.

The others where begging him not to do it as Fener had already been cast out by then, and there was no way off telling who or what would claim Rath'Fener's hands. If you can remember, that after the hands had gone that all these stange tatoos and writing appered on the priest's flesh? that was somthing using his hands to take his body over. Itkovian stopped that from happening by taking the priest's pain away and allowing him to die.

Oh okay, I get it. So the writing on Heboric was similar in that an unknown god was trying to take his body over as well? Or because he got Rath'Fener's hand.

The mistake you're making is in treating them as related events. The only way they're related is the connection to Fener. An unknown god wasn't trying to take over Heboric's body - from touching the statue his hands were infused with the power of the Jade and of otataral. I'm not sure what happened to Rath'Fener's hands...maybe no one was able to claim them after he died, so they're kind of just....there.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up.

They were horrified as some demon or other terrible God would have taken over the man's being..since Fener wasn't there to collect

precisely, and this happened, but Itkovian taking the pain of Rath'Fener and then trying to do the same for the alien god broke that up and Rath'Fener died.

Everyone has clearly stated what occured and why everyone was freaking out about why it was a terrible thing for him too do. But, really, he deserved it and I am personaly glad that Rath'Fener got what was coming to him since he betrayed the Grey Swords. I wa sonly upset that Itkovian took his pain and let him die that quickly. Should of lasted a lot longer IMO. But, then again, I'm a man who likes to see his justices drawn out to the last drop.
