So do i understand correctly that not only do you have the more or less typical levels of municipal (city), provincial/regional (chunk of country) and federal (country) governments, but you ALSO have to vote for the EU. Ew. That's a lotta red tape. Does this work?

The EU parliament can not make laws it can only pass on recommendations to the European Council, Euro law is only passed by the agregated opinions of the various ministers and heads of the member states. The European parliament is nothing more than a taling shop continually trying to carve out more powerz for itself and attempting to further federalise Europe. Which is a shame.

Our local governmental units Country, Town, Borough councils etc have no law making powers they are really just admin units playing at politics setting concil tax within bands set by the government and doing admin. They are peopled exclusively by power mad busy body little Englanders.

Given what the Tories tend to be like when in local government, I can see this turning into some sort of national disaster/scandal... There will be a fair few outsourced municipal contracts that go to some familiar faces, I should think... Lots of agencies making obscene profits who just happen to have directors who are related to council members... Local government scumbag politicians are even worse than the national ones, I know, I've dealt with a fair few in my professional capacity (which, in itself, is a bloody scandal given what I do for a living...)

There going to be was a whole rant here about the Civil Service and how the next government is going to do the equivalent of pouring suger into its petrol tank whilst simultaneously pissing in its face, all the time saying "This is your fault, it's for your own good." But it's off topic; and I really don't need to be getting that annoyed at the moment...

ps I'm not even going to broach the subject of that *word which makes Hetan cry* Nick Griffin because the whole thing, on both a personal and societal level, just makes me far too depressed.

This method of resisitance is rather tempting, though

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants.
