So, what about a game? The stupidest commitment I may ever make on this forum...

I'd be interested in trying something along those lines, if and when it happens.

From the way Mafia and the ill-fated Diplomacy (Dammit Tapper, I so was going to take the Middle-East from you) games have gone, you either have to make something like this fast paced (no longer than 2 - 3 weeks) which is a bit difficult given the setting, or be a bit of an ass about who you let play. It might be not be nice to refuse people, but good intentions and checking the board two or three times a day (and having an hour or two to contribute) are two totally different things.

I'm still thinking about taking over from Tapper since he didn't have the time to run a game.

I'm trying to make it so anyone could happily play regardless of time required and make sure its runs at a good pace. My initial idea would be to pair people up, so there's either 2 players to one character, or have a backup person who takes over briefly if someone is away to keep the game going.

That way you should still be able to take part regardless and can pair up experienced with inexperienced players if need be.

I probably need to think up some way to add and remove characters without it being too silly as people will drop out or want to be added (maybe :D ) over time.

Not promising anything here, but are people still keen to try it? It'll probably be D&D (thats Dungeons and Dragons) which is a Fantasy based game, as thats easiest to run and we are on a Fantasy forum after all. If you've never played before, don't let that stop you. I'm happy to explain stuff and will guide people through character creation which is the hardest bit.

I'd love to play, for one - some weeks I can be hyperactive, others much less so. The consistent output required of a GM is however far beyond my possibilities, hence not running it.

I liked the sound of the game that was mentioned earlier. Obviously it's up to whoever runs it what gets played, but I think something that has as little dice-rolling and character sheets etc as possible will be good. I've never played DnD, so my impressions of the game might be a bit off, but I would think combat situations wouldn't work that well on a forum, since it needs a little bit of input often, from each of the players in turn. I think we would need something that, worst case and your schedule gets tight, you can pop in every day or two and still be able to contribute without holding anyone else up.

Well I've never run a Paranoia game before - I don't really fancy running a system I don't know on a forum i'm sure its asking for trouble.

There is stats and dice in D&D, and I'd hate to go without them, it wouldn't have the same feel and would be lacking the character advancement stuff which adds to the game. I intend to be doing most of that work myself and if anyone else wants to help DM. I have a program which I can store everything and keep track of whats going on, and it does all the rolling.

It probably all needs to be tried to see how fast or slow it goes though.

Like I said, it's up to whoever runs the game to choose a system. I think the trick will be to have things streamlined enough that you arent required to give input every couple of minutes to do checks or whatever, but without taking all the interaction out of the game either. It wouldnt be much fun to have an "You enter the room - there's a an epic battle but you all died" scenario, but waiting a couple of hours (or even days) for someone to cast a spell wouldn't be much fun either.

I'd suggest using a slightly modified version of GURPS with the relative skill levels for combat or the forum oriented WoD system.
The latter seems to work well in general on forums since it requires no dice (and even on table top dice aren't used often).
That or DnD modified 4th edition rules (since they're far more standardized and less varied).
I can try and find the WoD forum system, people I know use it.
As to modifying the other two I have GURPS I could take a look at it, but I don't have 4th edition DnD so someone else would have to look into it.

I'm up for playing. Not much in the way of reason for me not to have time, unless this carries all he way to the summer at which point i'll probably fall off the forum again :(

Will look into the Inn and Paranoia mentioned earlier later to day; in the mean time can anyone explain/discribe what yall are talking about here? And maybe a few works on Mafia.

On critizing here but off hand, I would say some-one needs to take charge and dicide to get the ball rolling.

That said taking a walk in the dark might be interesting.

Alright, I'm finished exams, and figure you lot should either all be incredibly busy or otherwise incredibly free. At least with enough time to play in a bit of a light RPG.

Now, I'm posting this here (and PM'ing a whole bunch of you to make sure you notice) now, because it will take some time for me to get things sorted as far as a 'campaign'/story goes, and figure out exactly how I'm going to work this. But it'd be nice if we can start before December, or early on in the month at worst. So....

ROLL CALL.

Unemployed! So I'll have time! Also the Chat might be entertaining to highjack for this.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I may be able to play. I'm on a lot but I just haven't been posting all that much. I'm GMT-5 and can play more than likely 10am to 1pm most days.

Excellent. @Illy - what sort of times does that make you? GMT morning until late evening? XD

I've got the basics worked out already...I'd want a minimum of 8 players for that, though. I can rework it to fit a smaller party, but the ideal is 8+.

I hope you guys don't mind GRIMDARK aka W40k as your setting...

I've set up two forums and two moderator accounts for the game. One of the forums is the Spoiler Heaven section - aka the Spectator's Lounge. Mainly for people who sit out the game, or choose to permanently kill-off their character (this will work similarly to Paranoia, though with less cloning and more options for change, but will take slightly more time before you can start playing again).
The other one will contain the relevant game threads...probably at most two or three, if people ever split up, barring any administrative posts I make regarding rules/character generation, of course.

The mods WILL be integral to the plot, they aren't just arbitrary figures for controlling the game. One will only come into play partway through, however.

Uhm...I'll post up more detailed specifications (as in, what I will be expecting from you guys, the players) a bit later, or once I get a few more interested parties. :)

I expect the whole thing to run over maybe the course of a month. If it runs longer than that (for whatever reason) I will be calling a 'Weekend Freeze' on proceedings for Christmas/Boxing day, etc. I don't think it will, though. Or who knows, you may all enjoy it so much... lol!

That's assuming 8 players, and moderate levels of participation. By which I mean, at least, on average, 10 posts a week. Which is pretty low...

Anyway. Thanks for the quick response, Bubba and Illy!

I do want in, hoping we can start like Dec 14/15 though. I have finals for the first two weeks of December so not really a great time. After that I'll be on break for 4-5 weeks and will have plenty of free time.

edit: GMT -5
