I played the DS version of Chrono Trigger and absolutely loved it - it is probably my favourite. Also, the DS re-vamp of FFIV was superb. I like my strategy RPGs too, like Fire Emblem and Disgaea, and Jeanne D'Arc. All of these work really well on the handhelds. Oh, and mustn't forget Golden Sun.


I also liked Oblivion, Mass Effect 2 and Fallout 3, and - going back a bit - Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and Planescape Torment.

I'm not even done my first playthrough, and I can't wait to do it all over again with diff choices.

not really. it's built around a 6 man party instead of solo. ALso, AD&D rules.

The Baldur's Gate series and Torment are amazing games and IMO better than NWN. If you don't mind the older graphics they're just as good as the best of Bioware's recent fare. Torment has one of the best stories I've ever experienced in the video game.

Mass Effect 1, and 2 though it's less of an RPG.

Also, AD&D rules. I can't stress this enough. The numbers and counting are comically complicated compared to NWN's D&D3 rules. THAC0(Attack) and AC(Armor) are the better the lower they are, best in the deep negative values of -20 and below. Also, there's just about a metric gazillion of different saving throws. And restrictive class and race and who can use what restrictions. And that's just the top of the iceberg.

Maybe because I learned D&D while 2nd Edition was the standard but I don't feel all the numbers from that edition were complicated at all. As a matter of fact, I used to have all the important pages from the Player's Handbook memorized, so I never felt lost on anything. And if I remember correctly, there were 5 different saving throws, compared to the three there are now. True, each of those, except one, was grouped with one or two others, but the abbreviations made it easy to remember. My DM never let me get my hands on his Dungeon Master's guide for some reason tho...You're right in that the restrictions were rather ridiculous but our slew of house rules certainly matched the number of mods/addons you can find for alot of current games :p

I'm going to conveniently blame BK for the thread necro before giving props to these two slighly obscure titles:

  • Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
  • Divine Divinity

Had loads of fun with those two although the former got pointlessly easy (for a magic user anyway) about halfway through (think 95% resistance against any sort of damage) and the latter wasn't really complete (the last act basically had large empty levels).

I'll go with NWN, BG2, BG, KotOR, Skyrim, Planescape: Torment, Torchlight (if that counts!) among the usual suspects, possibly in that order

Morrowind. Always and forever. I get excited by talking about it, and I can talk about it for hours. Anyone who brings up the Elder Scrolls series to me when talking about games usually regrets it, since I end up coming off like someone who hates Oblivion and Skyrim. This certainly isn't the case, as I love all of the games, but comparatively Morrowind >>> Skyrim >> Oblivion.

Final Fantasy VI: My favorite Final Fantasy game by far. Great story, wonderful cast of characters, and the best villain in the series.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Can I list a game that I haven't actually beat yet? I'm only 40 hours into this one (and apparently still only 1/3rd of the way through), but the quality of this game is amazing. It's one of those unexpected gems, and probably the only reason I haven't thrown out my Wii yet.

Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords deserves an honorable mention. The game completely falls apart at the end, but otherwise I think it's vastly superior to the original.

In terms of games that lean a bit more toward the action spectrum, Dark Souls and Mass Effect are both great.

There was a mod recently released for KOTOR II which adds in most of the unfinished content.

I really need to get around to playing KOTOR games...

My head says Morrowind, but my heart says Skies of Arcadia. I've still got both the Dreamcast and the expanded GameCube version. I loved the Shenmue series on the Dreamcast as well, but Skies of Arcadia was another level up again :)

I played the crap out of that game, it was so enormous and yet I must have completed it 5 times (even the demo which came with the Dreamcast magazine was hours long!). Once I even collected EVERY SINGLE ITEM AND WEAPON in the game - that's how much I enjoyed it :)

It would be the first game that I would ever pre-order. I can see an HD version being released, they're doing it all the time now, and Sega have already done it with the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure games.

A sequel though...I've been burned by rumours too many times. I'll only believe it when it's physically in my hands :)
