As a movie, it's decent. doesn't blow you away at any point but all the elements are good enough.
As a message about possible UN complicity in eastern european sex-slave trafficking of girls... fuck.

The tv mini-series SEX TRAFFIC of a few years ago was better done and far more disturbing, but even so...

saw Hesher the other day...fucking awesome! LOVED IT!

also saw From Paris with Love, which was actually pretty fun. John Travolta really surprised me in that movie...

watched Conan.

Got to say, that 2-3 minute preview with Conan as a kid? Best thing in the movie by MILES.

say 6 dismembered limbs out of 10
(but if it didn't have that opening sequence with Conan as a kid? - 4)

Saw a few things lately.

It's not exactly new, but I watched Super and liked it fairly well. Story was nice, though the telling of it was hit and miss (Liv Tyler's character was pretty weak, Andre Royo was good but ultimately wasted). Rainn Wilson was quite good except at his most emotive moments, he's not a very good crier. Ellen Page was pretty fantastic throughout. The real showcase though was the violence, which was brutally, hilariously awesome. I had finally seen Confessions of a Superhero last week, so it was a good supplement.

Also watched The Parking Lot movie, a documentary about parking lot attendants near a Virginia university. A pretty laid back (personality wise) lot owner, humanities grad students as employees, and a fairly preppy customer base made for some entertaining clashes. As it started I thought it was a bit too college-kid pretentious, but it settles into a much less grating, more interesting groove soon enough. It turns out to be, at least in part, a pretty thoughtful piece about how people treat other people they assume to be of a lower station in life.

And then I watched Submarine, the directorial debut from Richard Ayoade from The IT Crow and Garth Marenghi. Observations I read that it's like a child of Rushmore and a grandchild of Harold & Maude (at least on the one side of the family tree) were apt, but it managed to stand on its own as well. Actual personality and character instead of just generic indie quirk, is what they have in common, and what makes them strong.

Last night the gf and I finally watched CASABLANCA for the first time.

Great film, I can definitely see why it won Best Picture in '43.

The DVD cut is surprisingly well done with the negative completely cleaned up and the audio nearly impeccable. The only thing of note ( and since I've never seen it before I don't know if this was because of the DVD transfer or not), but when characters got glossy eyed at all (mostly Ingrid Bergman) it looks like their eyes were soaked.

Great film.

Ahhhh. I wish i could watch Casablanca for the first time. ^_^

Humphrey Bogart is so fantastic. The Maltese Falcon is probably my 2nd favorite of his.

Yeah, the FRIGHT NIGHT remake was awesome, I loved it, especially David Tennant!

So I finally sat down and watched THE GODFATHER and THE GODFATHER PART II for the first time ever. I loved the first one and was totally amazed by it....then I watched the second one and it was even better. Seriously, I now totally understand why these films are so revered. Incredible across the board.

Although to be completely fair, part 3 isn't actually that bad a film. It just suffers massively in comparison to the first 2.

If it was an unrelated movie about mafia life, it probably would be viewed as being pretty good. Sadly, it bears the cross of being a follow on to two of the finest films ever made.

and something strikes me - the Norwegians were fucking badass.

Not only did they burn their own arctic base down, they chased that alien bastard across the ice.

By comparison, the Yanks have a damn poor showing over all

Watched "Blindness" last night, based on the Nobel Prize winning Jose Saramago's novel Ensaio sobre a cegueira in which an infectious blindness spreads from person to person. Quite an interesting flick, if a bit too long IMO. Good acting, setting, and the story is wonderful.

7 out of 10 eye-exams.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....
