Saw the Sorcerers Apperentice and must say its one of the worst movies I've seen recently, the few bright spots where some rather nice special effects. Suffers from the same problems with trying to appeal to young people by going for low humour as say transformers or most "big" action films recently. It also might have the worst opening scene/s of any movie I've seen. Its a pitty a few scenes show what the movie could have been with a bit more thought put in.

So, what you're saying is that I am going to like it?

Nic Cages movies have been downhill ever since Raising Arizona. He peaked too early.

I'm looking forward to the Sorcerors Apprentice. I don't expect anything great from the film itself except for flashy magic effects, but I am looking forward to Cage playing a cooky wizard facing off against Alfred Molina.

Looking at his list of movie on IMDB it's certainly hit or miss, but off the list there's plenty of good ones from the past 10 years:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000115/

Kick Ass (worst. dad. ever.)
Bad Lieutenant (I haven't seen it but supposedly he's great in it)
The National Treasure films (Fuck you haters, yeah it's not Indiana Jones, but I like them)
The Wicker Man (Hilarious and Fucked up)
Lord of War (Great role)
Adaptation (very good, reminiscent of his 80s/90s best)
The Family Man (I didn't really care about the film, but Cage was good)
Gone in Sixty Seconds (Great action film)
Bringing out the Dead. (fucked up film, in a good way)

My favorite film with him remains The Kiss of Death, where he punches a guy to death in his office and bench presses a Stripper.

I'll agree with you in Adaptation, he was brilliant.

Saw Sorceror's Apprentice and I liked it. It seems a tad strange because it's really only trying to be a standalone kids movie that's also entertaining for more mature audiences, but the size of the special effects budget kind of makes it seem like it's trying to be more. But it isn't. You can tell its sticking to being a simple entertaining movie because they don't get very original with the namings (the good sorcerors are called Merlinians and the evil sorcerors are called Morganians, after Merlin and Morgan le Fey) and they don't really go into much backlore of how the magic works or the history or any such. And, given a particularly central plot point, its a bit weird that there are only 4 evil sorcerors seen in the movie.
Spoiler

Nicholas Cage isn't as crazy as I was hoping he would be, but the role doesn't truly call for that kind of thing (they could've gone that direction, but didn't). instead being more like an Obi-Wan-like role. There's a delightful bit of plot with Horvath's (the evil sorceror) situation mirroring a part of Balthazar's (Cage, the good sorceror) that I especially liked throughout. There's also several jokes/homages/references to other works, including Eragon, Star Wars and another I won't name because when it happens you'll be like "Oh noooooooes" but it is awesome and cute.

In conclusion, it's a movie that doesn't try and make up its own new lore, but rather sticks to typical systems and stylings that have already been seen aplenty in fantasy and urban fantasy. Then it takes all that and makes a very entertaining movie with imaginative settings and plot, and makes it all look damn good with great special effects.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

He's flat out amazing in Bad Lieutenant. That movie is awesome, despite the unwieldy title.

I ate in the restaurant the brothers in Lord of War work in. Really, really good Russian food. Also a good movie.

Adaptation, brilliant. Gone in Sixty Seconds, brilliant.

I've been very lucky over the last couple of days. I saw Inception on Saturday, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last night and am currently watching Old Boy (again) on Film4.

I genuinely cannot understand why Hollywood are remaking TGWTDT or Let the Right One In for that matter. They are both fantastic films that will lose all their identity, mood....fuck it, basically everything that makes them great films will be lost in translation. :p
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

Most of Hollywood is apparently all out of ideas.

Started watching Band of Brothers again. In case you were wondering, yes, it is still awesome.:p

Have you see The Pacific? It's really good... not as good as Band of Brothers, but still worth the time. It is a lot more gorier then Band of Brothers.

My problem with The Pacific, after having watched only the first four episodes is that the fight scenes nearly always take place in pitch black. Now, I have nothing against the realism in the depiction, but it makes viewing what is going on, and therefore understanding what is going on much, much more difficult. Perhaps this changes in the later episodes when they move away from the early, early island hopping.

It was okay, but in my viewings the characters from Band were much, much better than those in The Pacific.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Is this the one about the three sailors who are on leave and out on the town? Not sure if all of them were sailors. But I did enjoy that movie quite a bit. It is indeed pretty talky and meandering, but mostly in a good way. I remember there's a scene with a dinner with one of their parents that was particularly entertaining.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

It was indeed. Dinner and the after-dinner boozy walk, were quite the sight...

I watched Hot Tub Time Machine - not bad, not great but not bad...

I also watched Couple Retreat for the first time- not bad, better than Hot Tub Time Machine... felt like some of the relationship advice was forced out... and Vince Vaughns character seemed to fix his relationship without fixing his pushiness and asshole-i-tude

my next theater movie will probably be "the other guys"

Watched a spade of movies today, being a bit under the weather.

Half Nelson - drama about a inner-city school teacher who forms a friendship with one of his students after she discovers that he has a drug habit. Quite a good movie, the acting in it was superb, and Ryan Gosling played his role particularly well.

Squid and the Whale - film about the split up of a family. Got a bit angsty at times, but I enjoyed it overall and William Baldwin's character made me laugh (even though he wasn't really trying to).

Junebug - great film about a Chicago art-dealer travelling to North Carolina to meet her new in-laws. I swear, I will watch any movie Amy Adams does, she is just fantastic.

The Departed - believe it or not, I'd never seen this movie before. It. Was. Awesome.

In The Loop - beyond hilarious.

'All right, that's enough with the fucking Oxbridge pleasantries.
'Wh...what's Oxbridge about saying hello?'
'SHUT IT, Love Actually! You want me to hole-punch your face?'
