OBSERVE AND REPORT (might be decent comedy, Seth Rogen has had a decent run till now)
STATE OF PLAY (Russel Crow's new movie, political drama)
FIGHTING (seems to have a interesting script)

The rest is utter shite...so it seems.
Unless you rate Zac Effron in a movie called 17 AGAIN that is...

This is movie related - so briefly...
Having just picked up on this, I'd say that from my pov it doesn't look like Mez was american bashing; she could have re-worded what she posted though, as it obviously came over as a broader comment than she intended.

I just want to back up her original post, by saying that in the uk, for as long as I remember, much as we enjoy them, some American films have always been seen as dumbed down somewhat, to the extent that phrases like 'hollywood ending' are common, and it is assumed that if a film is made from a book, for example, certain elements will be removed as they might be too complicated. This is generally backed up when the film is released, and those changes have been made.

It is pretty much fact that changes are made to well-known source material to make subtle plots more obvious, and movie critics/reviews will often report that this was because, during test screenings, the audience 'didn't understand what was going on' until the changes were made. This might just be how the media in the uk spins it, but it does give an overall impression that because the films are American, and they are 'tested' on American audiences, then any changes or dumbing down is due to them. In some cases this is described in the extras of dvds, by the people that produced the film, when they explain why they changed things. So it's not idle speculation.

So Mez might have worded her post so it looked like all Americans were the cause of this, but i doubt very much she meant it like that. And, to edit her post, and then comment on the reworded version is pretty unfair. I think it's a shame how quickly she got bashed, rather than asked to explain/elaborate, something that has happened in more than one thread over the last couple of days.

I'm sure the dumbed down/unsubtle remarks were not supposed to be taken so personally, I'm surprised they were taken that way so quickly.

Is there any news on the Golden Compass sequels? I've always been under the impression that they just wouldn't get made, as it would be impossible to dance round the religious aspect like they did in the first one. Not to generalise or anything (!) but I can't see a big studio agreeing to make a film that includes the

New line stuidos were idiots and sold the international rights to THE GOLDEN COMPAS before the movie was released. It cost them 200million to make and the U.S domestic takings for the film was only around 70mil as apposed to the international sales of around 300 million. So them selling their international rights cost them the 300 million taken internationally.

The Catholic church backlash with regards to the "anti religious" aspects to the movie is being used as a scape goat excuse for the sequels not to be made.

Last i heard, Pullman has not been contacted by Warner Bro's (who now own New Line) about making the squeals. Its all been put "on Ice" because of the religious aspect, which is nonsense if you ask me

I also remember the heavy american bashing that happened on the forum in years past. In fact, I miss those days because it allowed me to get into fights. And Marduk was pretty rabid when defending the US, which was always funny given his confrontational style.

As for movies, anyone see the Japanese movie Departures (Okuribito)? Japanese media went nuts over its academy award, but I don't know anyone who has actually seen it....
