Sorry to anyone if this has already been mentioned,
The ghost army of the Sekala crossing really woke me up to how good this book really is. I mean, the way Erikson describes the horrific ancient battle between family members was stunning.

The Azath houses. Thinking about them blows my mind, the Malazan world's version of the Dark Tower!
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

I like when that guy in the desert turned into a bunch of bugs(was it bugs?) and they consumed I think Baudin or maybe it was someone else, but either way it was chilling and creepy, aahhhh

Gryllen turned in rats and chewed Kulp. But yeah, it was a great scene perhaps because it happened so fast and you don't understand what has happened right away.

it's not quite a favorite, but everytime Felisin talks, it's a Holy @#$% moment, as in "Holy @#$% I want to choke her!" Crappy circumstances aside, she's a horrible person.

Sormo's death. Him being a young character, and me being 14, I couldn't help but have a crush on him
Aw, butterlies... so sad...
And of course the end with Coltaine's death... nuff said.

Is there more about this in later books? Since reading those pages in Deadhouse Gates, I've wanted to know more about them and the battle.

I have to say the nailings in the end got me a bit shocked.

I'll go with Bauchelain on this one, the moment when Kulp gets killed by Gryllen is so effective. You won't even process it at first, but when it hits you it hits you hard.

I would have to agree that Coltain is likely the best part about DHG. I liked what you said about him not having a pov and that made me think that it was precisely that fact that he had no personal interaction with the reader that made him so incredible. Part of it was that his greatness was sort of made unattainable throughout the book because we didn't get to see into his mind - see his flaws and worries. Awesome character!
Fiddler is also one of my favorite character's because of this book. "Wide eyed, stupid." Great quote that sorta sums up almost all of his experiences throughout the entire book. His interactions with Mappo and Icarium were rich.

Gryllen's transformation moment was a scary scene. You really understood his nickname, 'The Tide of Madness' when he suddenly became thousands of rats swarming at Kulp.

Another big one for me was the Empress revealing to Kalam that Dujek and the Host going renegade on Genebackis is part of her plan.
I thought it was interesting that Laseen somewhat justified herself to Kalam instead of killing him. Earned a few respect point from me because up till then I saw her a sort of a villain. It's interesting (but very realistic) how Erikson is able to make no one party entirely evil or entirely good.

Along with all the epicness already stated there is this:
"Shadowthrone sighed. 'And with such soldiers, it is no wonder we conquered half a world--no, Fiddler, I do not mock. This once, I do not mock. Though Laseen does not deserve such as you. Nonetheless, when these mists clear, you will find yourself in the alley back of Smiley's Tarven.'"
This may be one of my favorite moments in the series. Also while looking for this quote found a another dropped hint, maybe one I am looking to far into.
"They set off, westward.
After a time, as they walked on the plain, Icarium glanced at Mappo. 'What would I do without you, my friend?'
The nest of lines framing the Trell's eyes flinched, the smiled ruefully as he considered his reply. 'Perish the thought.'"
IIRC Perish is westward of Seven Cities on the same continent, again I may be looking to far into it but it is Steven Erikson...

This book was fantastic. I really loved GotM, and liked DG just as much, if not more. Started MOI last night, and look forward to the rest of the series. Sooooo good!
Other than the expected ones (Duiker + Coltaine deaths, etc.), I found the most "what the !@#$" moments to be with Felisin, Heboric, Kulp, and Baudin. There were a number of unexpected hits all at once, once they leave the cavern. WHAM. The merchant is D'ivers. WHAM. Kulp is dead. WHAM. Baudin is dead. WHAM. Felisin is the Sha'ik Reborn. None of that was anticipated at all, and hooked me for good, I think.

I think his name is Lull -- the older L-soldier, not List -- when Duiker sees that he's had most of his face sliced off or whatever. And yet he's still there in the thick of it, all the way to the Fall. Pretty awesome moment and character.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Skimming this thread reminds me how DH was just one scene of horror after another, what with Felisin/Heboric/Baudin's story, every appearance of Gryllen, the battles along the Chain, etc. I guess Fiddler and Kalam mostly avoided the really terrible scenes, but I always forget about their stories because the other storylines were so heavy.
Gryllen swarming Kulp and leaving wet bones would be my major WTF moment of the book if not for the Fall and the crucifixions. I still can't quite believe any of that happened, and I've re-read it.
The horror of what the Aren Way must have looked like just blows my mind, and then we revisit it with Felisin/Sha'ik Reborn, and then Gesler's crew and Mappo.

In the TTH forum- message from steve- he says that a roger water's song with a line about hyena's gave him the idea for most of the chain of dogs-- has anyone actually heard this song?(you can check the post for the name) or at least know the line he's talking about?
Bit of a thread resurrection here, but could the song be "What God Wants" from Amused To Death. Perhaps these two lines in particular...
"The jackass and hyena
Took the feather from its book"
