1. Quick Ben... yeah, I know it isn't clear what happened to him but I'm confident he will survive until the end. I fell like it is either QB or ST/Cot that will have the final lines of dialogue in the book :)
2. Paran... he might die, again, but will probably ascend to true godhood in the end if that happens so he won't die "with finality" (maybe he will replace the Errant as an Elder God if they truly are natural forces that can't be just erased)
3. Felisin (I think she still counts as a Malazan)... Her Salvation faction hasn't been featured after RG, but I'm sure we will see more of it in tCG.
4. Hellian
5. Apsalar

Ones I would like to survive but probably won't are: Tavore, Fiddler, Corab (his luck finally running out might work very well storywise), and Kalam (his death would fit very well into the theme of the books, to return almost from the dead, do something heroic and then to die).

I have a crazy idea that the CG will somehow be healed and Felisin will unwittingly have prepared the new priesthood for his new aspect as a God of Salvation.

If this is the case then who will be the Big Baddy? In my line of thinking, it is called the Malazan book of the fallen, this could be a series dedicated to the crippled god as he is the fallen one or it could be the destruction of the malazans as we know them. Elder Gods only come into play into the last few books, so these where not the main baddies, maybe it will be the FA, but we don't know.

I think Paran will survive, he has to. the more i think about it i think Lostara Yil will survive, hedge and fiddler and grub :)

I like the reference to the new generation of gods.
Would it mean the elder gods will become obsolete?
Or the Holds -> Deck -> to something else, a new pantheon or houses?

or a new mix of EG / Holds, Houses / Deck power structure, with the CG in it?

We have
Grub & Sinn's newly found warren -- so does this mean Grub will at least survive, and Sinn?
Whiskey Jack's a soldier god now? Would Fiddler need to die to join? I'm thinking the Bonehunters will die in tCG.

Hellian - She will still be on the booze drinking her way through whatever crazy shit gets thrown her way.
Fiddler - If fid dies will have to set something on fire.
Mallik Rel - That juice arse is going to live for sure, just to piss us off.
Quick Ben - If Quick dies I will also have to burn things, or smash things. I know I will do something destructive.
Hedge - Why kill off Hedge?

The below quote was from HoC and it more or less guarantees that Grub will survive all this. So he's one of the few (only?) characters that we don't have to worry about getting killed.

Quote

It was said the captain's adopted child - who at that time was known by the unforutunate name of Grub- refused the wagon on the march. That he walked the entire way, even as, in the first week beneath the year's hottest sun, fit and hale soldiers stumbled and fell.

This is perhaps invention, for by all accounts he was at that time no more than five years of age. And the captain himself, from whose journals much of that journey and the clash in which it culminated is related in detail, writes very little of Grub, more concerned as he was with the rigours of command. As a result, of the future First Sword of the Late Empire period, scant details, beyond the legendary and probably fictitious are known.

Now that Hood is out of the picture, does anyone think that 'death' will mean something different?I find it had to consider a character dead if they are still active. 'Death' in the Malazan Book of the Fallen cannot be described as any one thing. For people to say that Hedge is dead, it is not really correct. He is very much an active player, which makes of death a murky thing. I like the way that different events and circumstances can alter what happens when a character 'dies'. But there is something bordering on what we may want to call a true death: oblivion. Wandering around another warren or realm and being active doesn't constitute having died a true death. Even being killed and ending up in Dragnipur isn't a true death. There is always the possibility of returning to the flesh, regardless of how remote it may seem. The T'lan Imass couldn't be considered dead, they are immortal and were flesh and blood. Each and every one of them did not die. The only death capable of giving them peace would be oblivion, not to wander in an ephemeral state in some misty dank cold realm.

My point, I suppose, is that it isn't really clear what death is in this series, even though for a large portion there has been a Lord of Death. And that is a large part of what makes it so interesting. We see people 'die', only to return, we wonder at others and whether oblivion has taken them or whether they still exist. This, I think, is the more interesting and profound aspect of this topic.

I see your point and agree with it mostly, however there would be this to address....

when Kalam or Apsalar kills all of the claws in Malaz, where do they go? When the demon gets killed in GOTM where does that go? The enka'ral dies, where does it go? Other than Coltaine or Duiker, where does all the dead go from the chain of dogs? or in DoD where do all the dead go?

I agree with your points about main characters, however I think dead is dead for a lot of other characters, it just depends on the characters importance, influence and popularity within the world of Wu I would think?

You do know what I mean I hope, I sometimes find it hard to explain myself, I know there was a Hood before TTHs that is why I also included DoD :)

In large part that is my point. Where did they go? Supposedly some went through Hood's Gate, others when somewhere else. Where they can continue to be more or less active depending on something akin to their potential. Potential sustained through circumstance, situation, influence, interaction, and attention: in short their history, in the contingent sense. But by your argument, if influence and power and circumstance dictate the extent to which one 'dies' then there is a question about the necessity of death. Counterexamples do not constitute a solution to the problem of death here. We are not really concerned about every individual that has died in the entire course of events; that would be too many to comprehend. But those figures who have, for better or worse, had eyes cast upon them in a gaze capable of granting rebirth, reincarnation, sustained activity etc, those figures call into question the paradigm of mortals having to die a necessary death.

In fact raising examples where the reader has no insights into what occurred following the death of an unimportant figure does not quell the question: death is not necessarily final. Perhaps then the better question is what is life? What is it to be alive. Biology - in this case - would be a poor explanation, and a boring one at that.

There's death that means oblivion from what I understood where one's soul isn't tethered anymore (no will?) and the soul begins to wander, and even fragments of their own memory fail and one forgets even who they were. This was the impression I got when chaos in Dragnipur kills the souls.

So, if there is no Hood as Lord of Death, it does not mean that realm. However, the throne of death is empty, and does it mean the gates are closed? Is this why Tool was not allowed to enter the realm and turned away by Toc? Or is it because Tool is I'mas and not allowed to enter the realm because of the TI ritual?

And there is Whiskeyjack/Iskar -- from what I understood, he is like a new generation of god--a god of soldier / dead soliders? Would all those who died in the Malazan related was, would their souls end up in Iskar's army?
