6000? Ugh, I'm barely scraping 800, although I did only just start the other day. Slow going though...deciding which sequence goes where is doing my head in.

EDIT: Nowhere near the finale though, it's not going to be 1000 words long, should be around 7,000 maybe.

Mine's not fantasy either. I'm writing about a guy who is feeling guilty over murdering his wife, is confessing it to his priest, and I'm telling the story in pieces that he remembers, not revealing why he killed her until the very end...

HELP!

I have a problem. my new vivid and innovative story idea versus old and tested written short story.

Which should I work on?

Go for new and vivid IMO.

Depends. I'd say new and vivid if you think you can pull it off in the time frame we have. If you don't think you can do your idea justice in that time, doing the other one might be better.

hmmm. yes it is at the heart of it a time constrain issue. I don't think volume is a problem here as much as quality so might be able to produce a miniature story with very hurried developments that would deliver decent entertainment but wont be as good as it could be with more time and concentration.

The old stories however are nothing grand or new, not to mention my english wasn't up to scratch back then so heavy edits still loom.

Given 4 months...=/

It'd be possible to write a full 150k word 1st draft of a novel in that timeframe. A very very very rough draft, yes, but that's about 15-30 times the length of a short story.

I guess I must just have a lot more free time than everyone else, being in school and all. :)

Well, I'm not a professional writer, nor writing full time. Neither is Dolmen. But we have until September? Cool, I thought it was the end of July for some reason.

We're not all as awesome and speedy as you Sixty haha I don't know why I'm even bothering to be honest. You, Yellow, Shin and possibly Dolmen as well (haven't read your work) will wipe the floor with me. Yours is particularly good. Although if I spent half the time writing as I do on here I might do alright lol. Decided on an idea yet, Dolmen?

Thanks :) I just don't have to work like all you guys do. Given that I'm approaching summer break, and schoolwork is next to nothing, I have way too much free time.

Although I'm supposed to be writing a reaction paper right now, which is why I'm browsing Malazan Empire instead of being productive.

I'm a uni student too, so it's not like I have a 9 to 5 job though. I work part time, but for me personally I'm finding it hard to dedicate a large portion of time to it because I have exams coming up, I have to maintain my home and also be in a relationship. Once uni break is on though, I should have plenty of time to dive in. :)

I'm thinking of running with the new idea and see where it goes. feels very mixed and several ideas are meshing together well. the intro was ridiculous but its really picked up steam ever since. should clock 2000 by sunday at a push. I'll just repost the old story in a new topic when I'm done to show the contrast in the stories

Thanks for the advice though guys, made the decision MUCH easier

cheers

I'm actually starting to regret sending in my entry so early. =/ Looking back on my writing now from just two months ago, there's been substantial improvement. What'll it be like in September? Who knows.

Oh well. Just writing that short story gave me a fantastic plot thread for my primary WIP, so it's all good. :)
