Thank you! I'm really, really glad you like it:)
I managed to get something done this weekend so I'll post another progress shot. Probably the last one before I post the finished thing, which may take awhile.
I re-painted the chainmail, think it looks better now.
I added a cloak, probably not the colour Rake would've used but it sets off the other colours nicely.
Fixed some minor issues.
Added the beginnings of some scrollwork (rereading DG atm and Heboric mentions the fine craftmanship of the tiste andii)

Couple of things:
Rakes skin isn't as Dark as I personally picture it, too brown rather than pitch black, but that's fine, it's probably hard to get expression etc if it's too black.
The feet, or legs not sure, there's just something rather odd there, maybe the body is a little too long?
And positioning of feet seems odd, just seems a sort of un-natural way to stand, but that my be just me.
Looking good though

I agree with Grief. I couldn't quite figure out what looked weird but it's his stance for me. Either way, excellent! excellent picture! I love the detail you put into the pomel of Dragnipur, it looks awesome mate.

Try standing with your feet 1 1/2 shoulder widths apart with your feet pointed straight forward. No deviation. Now bow your knees outwards.
Random Karate stances can be that silly, and standing in such can be VERY uncomfortable. Hence Rake's scowl.

The funny things is, I haven't used any browns! But I see what you mean and I've been thinking about fixing it for awhile, might resort to using dark blues and purples and reserve the picth black for the darkest shadows.
And honestly, I've been so focused on the armour I haven't thought about the legs. But now that you mention it the pose seems a bit...unnatural. I'll change that to something like this:
http://senshistock.deviantart.com/art/Sail...ord-17-81467548
and maybe shorten the legs a little. Would that be better?

Yes, the stance is now on my to-do list. I'm planning a painting marathon this weekend since my boyfriend is away

I'm glad you like it! I've been trying to stay as close to the descriptions given as possible. I'll post some close-ups later so you can see it better:)

Good job on rendering the metal of his pauldrons so far, and also the chainmail. I'd watch the elbows however, since I don't think the links would go like that considering how his arms are positioned.
As for his sword, you have two things to consider. It is described as having an archaic crosshilt and also being a two handed sword it could have a blunted section called the ricasso at the base of the blade. Cross hilt could basically be any kind hilt with long extension to both sides, just the opposite of what you have now. Archaic refers to something ancient, in the real world mostly to ancient greece or the stone age. What this means in the world of MBotF is beyond me.
For a good example of a slightly ornate cross hilt see the following picture.

and if just for curiosity read the wikipedia entry for the german 2-handed sword:

You're probably right about the mail, I'll go hunting for some suitable ref. pics. as I haven't painted chain mail before

The hilt was a deliberate choice on my part(although i said i was going to stay as true to the descriptions as possible). I tried out some cross-hilt designs but I didn't like any of them, so I decided to go with a more Viking-ish look. I actually have that picture in my Rake folder

I have a lot more work to do. Haven't even started on Traveller...

Just to check in:
The painting is progressing nicely. I hope to have it done by May 19 so I can enter it in the Wacom contest, hehe.
Quick question:
Traveller wears a long chain hauberk, right?
Is his sword single or double edged?
