As far as i know there is no plate mail ever described in the malazan novels. Skinner is constantly described as very heavily armored yet all he wore was layers of chain and a great helm. All you ever read about is chain, studded leather and some scale mail. So from that i would not give Anomander any large metallic pieces. Yes i know plate can be kick ass but Anomander's greatness lies elsewhere.

Personally i always pictured Rake sort of like the traditional vampire without the high collar or the frills or whatever. Just a really tall, and broad, and severe, dude ina cloak or cape with a huge scary sword. I think a good way to represent him would be to make him wear some chains with scaly leather gear that looks like dragonskin. Black and silver will be the colours i presume.

Now, what colour will you make his eyes?
Being optimistic's worthless if it means ignoring the suffering of the world. Worse than worthless. It's bloody evil. And being pessimistic, well, that's just
the first step on the path, and it's a path that might take you down Hood's road, or it takes you to a place where you can settle into doing what you can,
hold fast in your fight against the suffering. And that's an honest place, Cuttle.

Stop trying to apply your silly 'reality' and 'logic' to a story where a thousand thounsand year old elf analogue changes into a dragon. :p

iirc, MoI has a description of Korlat's armour, something like a close fitting overlapping plate armour, nothing elaborate or detail worked.

I believe there is also a description in GotM of Rake wearing robes at the Fete... iirc he doesn't exactly stop to change into armour before the fight with the Galayn demon.

The Liosan do wear plate armour. So why not the Andii?
Silly logic, I know :p

Ah, and Skinner wears plates, too. I remember it because I was surprised when i read the only quote indicating it apart from 'heavily armoured'.

I believe his mood would be sombre. What eye-colour is that? I dunno... In my painting he'll be waiting for Traveller, who might be in the foreground of the painting...haven't quite figured that out yet. I thought I'd start with Rake and do bg and fg later:P

Here's what I'm gonna do armour-wise:

Long hauberk, maybe with some decoration like Frodo's mithril shirt in LOTR, only manly.
Beru's Roman segmented armour piece
Vambraces - segmented like in the sketch or single piece like Michael McCormak's?
Cloak
Pants of some sort
Leather boots

So, my intital sketch minus the boots and the single piece in the neck area, which will be chain I think, with a cloak and another chest-piece, see Beru's picture. Not too fancy, not too boring. A compromise.

The armour will be dark, the chain will probably be metallic grey/blue, the decoration silver or red. I haven't quite figured out a palette yet.

I'll save the insane dragon-armour for the Tiste Liosan:P

Velvet is gay

And I like you discription, Grimhilde :p Hope to see the piece when it's done :p
I'd go with the silver decoration, btw. Seems to fit better, but that's just my own opinion

just remembering, his brother Andarist wore knee length chain mail and a segmented skull cap. His other brother Silchas wore leathers with various buckles and clasps that he would then tighten before going into battle. I would presume that Anomander would wear something reminiscent of what his brothers sported. Other Tiste and draconean ascendants also wear leathery armor like Sister Spite and Menandore. I really think he would be wearing garb that resembles all the Segulah descriptions.

Rake wears leather armour. I don't know where I saw it, but I saw it, I'm sure.
Plus, none of Kormack's stuff is strictly canon - he has artistic lisence.
Also, Dragnipur is drawn into his shape when he does the soletaken thing - re-read the Galayn scene, it's in there.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to assume, given the temper of the T'iste Andii, would have armor with a lot of plates for easy movement, looking like it was made with a dragons form in mind and sufficiently ornate as befits one of his status, as it goes I'm in the middle of a traveler rake pic at the mo and there's quite a lot of thought going into the armor which is bases on Michael Komarcks Anomander pic and from his interpretations he's done so far he doesn't miss (though I'm totally bias cuz hes one of my favorite artists) I settled on this design for armor and I put a couple of links for where I got some of the ideas hope it helps and good luck with the pic

Mmh, I disagree. You should keep in mind Rake's personality and how it influences his style of clothing. Thus, I'd dare to say, that skulls and pompous dragon armour is neither Rake's nor any other Tiste Andii's pair of shoes. No pun intended.

You're doing a Rake and Traveller pic too? Jeeez, I might as well throw in the towel right now, don't wanna go head to head with you on a concept as epic as this... :ball:

I'm just kidding. I think our two pieces will be totally different. Can't wait to see yours...

Btw, we should have another contest soon. it's fun!

yes, yes! That's what I've been thinking all along. On the one hand I would really love to do some crazy-ass armour, like onrack is doing, but on the other hand it doesn't feel like Rake. I don't know why...it's weird.

I'll just have to go a little crazy with Dragnipur.

On that note:

Anyone now what an archaic crosshilt looks like?

Rake may be a Lord, Knight of Darkness, First Son of Mother Dark and whatever, but he's preatty modest if you think about it. He seems to keep things going and care about everything, but he doesn't seem the guy who would boast about his powers and all. Maybe that's the reason?

While we're at it, since I had to do my daily share of keeping my hand alert, here's a quick sketch of how I would draw Rake's armour. Keep in mind, it's just my opinion :ball:
The colours represent the materials used, not the actual colours. And sorry for the face, the scanner screwed something I was pretty satisfied with completely up [looks girlish now, argh!].

I tried to keep it as fitting a swordfighter as possible.

ok, here's what I have so far. It's really really dark, but that's what you get for painting on a black background:P I hope you can see some of it at least...

The armour looks kinda green atm, but that'll hopefully change as I go along.
