So, I'm planning a Rake piece, or more specifically; a scene from TTH. My question to you is: What kind of armour does Rake have? leather, metal, full plate, scale mail, chain mail? What sort of style? Samurai, medieval, roman, bad-ass fantasy type?

I'll post a WIP so you can see what I have so far. Crit is most welcome(and it won't look this gay when I'm done...I hope).

It's my impression that like the rest of the Andii, he doesn't worry too much about appearance so what ever armor he uses would be plain, unadorned and practical. I can't remember him described as using any form of plate mail so probably some for of chain and leather armor.

Yeah, I doubt he has too much ornamental/embellished stuff. I'd go with the green and yellow areas you've drawn, but without the leg greaves - maybe leather boots, and a longer hauberk/chain?
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Personally I would think leather and chain perhaps under a bit of plate. I agree on the nothing fancy, it would be practical. I would think it would be well looked after though (i.e. shined, not heavily chipped) to a certain degree, but that just might be me.

but plain armour is sooo boooring:(

actually, that was my initial thought, but then I found this picture of this wicked dragon armour that I really wanted to paint, but I couldn't quite feel it on Rake. I'll give him chain and leather then, with perhaps a little bit more fancy boots, gloves and cloak. Dragnipur will have to be badass enough for the whole painting :D

What kind of armour is he wearing in that Michael McCormack (sp?) cover for the limited edition GoTM? That seems pretty canonical

Since I always had Rake in my mind wearing plate armour I think this might work, beru.

I have yet to see Michael McCormack make a picture of the Malazan Books that are "canonical" (is that really a word?)

But one could draw the mythical incarnation of Rake, half dragon half man, like the one we see in the deck and in Kyle's dreams. Scales and plates merging-

You can't see much of the armour there [just one arm], but seems pretty fancy. Could work, though.

Ok, so roman segmented plate armour with a little bit of fancy thrown in? Jeez, you guys are not making this easy...what about the lower half of the body? Any thoughts on that?

Black, no. Pink, yes! :D

How about how you sketched it? :p

But I'd say the fancy dragon armour is a bit TOO much :D

yes, it is! :p

I think I'll rework the sketch a bit, maybe implement that roman armour, cuz I quite like the look of it. But I won't make it too plain, this is Rake after all. if he doesn't have cool armour, who does?

yes it is a bit... overdone... the roman armor cant be that hard to paint... (start with a plain armor then ad the black lines where the plates overlap) then add the arms and overlay the sholder thing

I'm more worried about the shiny bits. Leather is a whole lot easier to paint...but practice makes perfect, right?

I never pictured him as wearing armour, i always pictured him in like a black robe type thing, with his sword strapped to him. What would happen to his armour when he veered to his soletaken form? Or his sword for that matter?

Maybe the armour merge with the scales and the sword becomesa tooth or a claw. Yes, it sounds ridiculus even to me
