maybe, but more happened in those 2 hrs to actually move, at least the River/Reaver/conspiracy plot along, than in all 14 eps combined. You can't blame scheduling for a show not getting enuf love.

Great chracters require great character development. In 14 eps we got mild progression in the Mal/SpaceHo romance. no progression in the cute engineer girl/stuck up dr unrequited lurv, Zoe and Wash making suggestive comments, Book acting enigmatic, a Baldwin bro being a dick and River perpetually hinting that she was something really impressive.... or put another way, nothing changed between the first few eps and the last few. Say what you will about Buffy, where she was in the premiere of S1 was very different from where she was at the end of it.
I give you the setting. Joss set up an interesting futurverse, but what gray-and-gray? Other than shooting a horse, the nastiest thing Mal ever did was trick his crew into deserting him so he could go down with the ship. And on the other hand you had Great Big Uncaring Authoritarian Establishment.

No. I wanted it to MOVE. Not in drips and drabs, but in actual steps that showe something was HAPPENING. Maybe you were truly madly stunned when Mal beat Elitist Royal Dick in the swordfight for Spaceho's honour, but it did nothing for the story. Jane had a whole frikkin town dedicated to him, but the following week was still a dick. River was basically Summer Glau acting trippy for 14 eps. Come on! Have Mal declare that the ruling class are a bunch of idiots and kick up the revolution. Have Jane be someone other than the same dick Baldwin's been playing since the X-Files only with better lines. Have River do... something, ANYTHING, before the dead last episode. I don't need 'splosions. One of the best episodes of genre tv ever was, imnsho, a BABYLON 5 ep that took place entirely in an empty room with a lead character being interrogated.

Buffy and characters never ended a season in the same place they started it. You had interesting side and ongoing plots that advanced. It had entirely unexpected random events like a major characters going evil, leaving, dying (sometimes almost randomly), getting major power-ups or downs...
But to each their own. we could debate this until the next failed Joss project and not convince anyone.
- Abyss, ...will add that Zoe is the only character ever to look hot in bad beige pants, i give you that.
