I agree with alot of the critiscisms on this page but I think you need to consider the fact that while RotCG isn't as good as it could be, it is by FAR better than Night of Knives. Plus I was starting to get tired of reading about the Bonehunters. I mean, they're badass and all but this is an empire that spans 3 continents and the farthest we've gotten into Quon Tali is Malaz Island! Someone had to go there and I think ICE did a respectable job.

Esselmont has the advantage of lacking the 'navel-gazing' aspect of some of Erikson's writing, but I think tRotCG could have benefited from a little more introspection.

I have to say that I enjoyed NOK more than ROTCG.

NOK was good, but it's more difficult to compare to the main body of Erikson's work on account of it's succinctness (I don't know how it compares to Erikson's shorter fiction, e.g. Blood Follows, as I haven't read any of it).

NOK felt much more like Esslemonts own style, while, for me, ROTCG just felt like a not-as-good Erikson clone. I really liked NOK, and some parts of ROTCG but for the most part ROTCG just felt like a writer trying to copy a style that isn't really his own.

NoK stacks up well next to the Erikson novellas, but that's almost like comparing apples and oranges. The B&KB books are just ridiculous good romps of debauchery and fun. NoK has more weight to it

edit: regarding ICE's writing in general, according to Pat, Stonewielder shows a great improvement in his style and voice

There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.

ICE's writing can be said to be going downhill. NoK stands at the top while RotCG begins the descent. SW is grating on my nerves. I'm trying, really trying but I'm about to throw down my Kindle if I come across another "gods!, ye gods, gods above, gods below", add in any other misplaced expletive here along with modern idioms that warp across time and space and imagination to land square in the middle of a fantasy landscape.

I really want to say something like, 'By the dark eyes of the golden llama of Fortwinth ye do be a dumb motherfucker for caring about such things!' but I'm afraid it would come across as mean, rather than just a silly riff on your rant, which it's supposed to be. Heh. (For the record, that mixture doesn't bug me, but I could see how it COULD grate)

I thought RotCG was written before NoK? I'm pretty sure I saw that somewhere. The publishing sequence was the other way round though.

Maybe I was harsh, but gods!, all the gods! ( a new one I forgot to mention ), gods below! Give it a rest for maybe a page or two. Or at least give some space to fener, driss, d'rek, bael and the rest. Hood's balls!!
