Tira is on the money and I cannot refute her logic. the deal MUST be made with the D & E people, cos they stand to get nothing if A is killed all B & C need to do is agree to split 25/25 and they'd get the majority. 1 gold is better than no gold.

D and E get one gold each and A takes the rest because if they vote A off, B and C would share the gold between each other?

Not quite, no. B has no reason to share with C, so it doesn't follow that D and E should vote yes for that reason.
Another hint then: consider the situation where there are only D and E left. What happens then?
Tira is on the right track, but not quite right.
Oh, and there are
Spoiler
...but I've seen that one before so I knew what to look for

Goddammit Sexually transmitted diversion!
Okay this is now the nth time...
D must not be allowed to put forward a suggestion cos if A, B and C are knocked out he can put forward the idea that he gets 50 and he will ALWAYS win.
But...I hate you STD

A=24
B=13
C=6
D=4
E=3
I tried about 3 times writing how i came up with this, but it sounded stupid everytime.
I am befuddled, just say if i'm close. This is kicking my ass.

By my logic E has to be one of the guys that gets offered some gold. D gets no deals cos he is in the strongest position overall. I'm still unsure whether to pick B or C to work out a deal with, but I'm too brain dead to work out the ramifications. I'm sure by the time STD sees this he'll say its wrong...just to spite me

Nah, you're headed in the right direction. In fact, given that I have already told you that Obdigore's answer was wrong, you should be able to figure out the correct one

E gets 50 because no one else would agree to a plan? Long-shot.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

The problem i see now is that, while D is going to vote no as he's in the strongest position and E will vote yes if he gets money at all. B and C could both get 49, just by offering E 1. so im gonna say 0,49,0,0,1 although this doesnt give A any money...

Do you guys just want me to give you the answer? At one point Obdigore posted the solution, but he changed it to something that was wrong before I could tell him he had got it right.

in that case A gets 48 C get 1 and E gets 1...
Even if wrong. I'll always be giving E 1 gold, cos he is dead weight.
But the problem is A, he has a lot of power seeing as he goes first, but it is a tenable position...why would C vote for him...unless-
How about A = 24, B/C = 25, E = 1?

Right. Well if it were just down to Daniel and Edward, then Daniel would propose 50 for himself and there would be nothing Edward would do about it. So that means that if Charles offered Edward anything, then he would happily take it. So if it was only the last three left, Charles would get 49 and Edward would get 1.
But then Daniel would be getting nothing, so he would happily take anything Ben proposed. Which means if there were only 4 left, Ben would get 49 and Daniel would get 1, leaving Charles and Edward with nothing. Given this situation, Charles and Edward would be willing to accept any offer from Angus to avoid getting nothing when Ben's turn to propose a method came around, and so the most gold Angus can get would be if he proposed that Charles and Edward get 1 gold piece each, and that he gets the other 48.
Right, someone else post a riddle. Obdigore kind of got it, I guess he should post one if he's around.

They may be selfish, but they have a sense of honour - once a game has been decided upon, they will stand by the results. They're that kind of bandit

I have another rather fiendish puzzle I could put up, but given that you guys took so long over this one, I'm not sure it's such a good idea...

well... at least I got my head round the Edward part of it.
how about an interim one...
When one does not know what it is, then it is something; but when one knows what it is, then it is nothing.
