I saw the 3D theatre screening of DARK WATER AND DEATH IN HEAVEN (still an awesome 2 parter)...and they showed the prequel THE DOCTOR'S MEDITATION and it was excellent! Hopefully they upload it for you all to see before tomorrow night.

he went to Trenzalore where he was supposedly buried, found out that the cracks in the universe were actually caused by the Time Lords trying to bring Gallifrey back home...but the Doctor realized that if they did the time war would start up again...so instead he helped fight off enemies on that planet for a thousand years, becoming old ( he was on the last of his 13 allowed lives, you see and this would be true death) Clara asks the Time Lords through the crack to give him a full new set of lives. Which they do, and he regenerates into the Twelfth Dcotor.

Took me a few days after watching to marshall my thoughts.

That was, probably, THE best opening episode to a DOCTOR WHO season in NuWho history. I mean it felt like the first part of a season finale, not the first episode of a fresh season.


Let's get into the nitty gritty.

So a few things off the hop, I had heard previously through the DW grapevine that not only Davros would show up, but that they would be revisiting the question posed by the 4th Doctor in REMEMBRANCE OF THE DALEKS of if you could kill young Davros to prevent the Daleks from existing, would you? Would that be considered the "right" thing to do? So when the kid was on the battlefield and the two soldiers were full on DRESSED like the Skaro inhabitants of the pre-Dalek-era (Kaleds and Thanls) showed up in the first few seconds, I was like ...oh shit, there he is. That's Davros as a child. Then to not only have Missy show up, but also the older Davros (Julian Bleach reprising his role from RTD era!!!) was like the icing on the cake. Then the rapid fire easter eggs; The Moldavium, The Shadow Proclamation (with Judoon AND The Shadow Architect!), The Witches of Karn...I mean the hits just keep coming.

I also loved that Missy's plan to get help in finding the Doctor was to hold the world hostage by freezing the planes...I'm sitting there going "Yup. That's the Master. Over the top as fuck!" Awesome. And Missy-vision made me giggle.

The Doctor with a Guitar? Brilliant.

The Camelot party scene drags a LITTLE bit on, but it's never boring...just long winded.

The Skaro reveal (which is what had everyone's jaws on the floor at the pre-screening of the ep) was great...but I saw it coming a mile away. Oh, but it DID give us that great moment with the Doctor and Missy talking about gravity...it was totally a Time Lord Science moment. Missy jumping and singing to test this out was great.

Oh and on Missy again, having her "Hey Missy you're so fine..." refrain from DEATH IN HEAVEN become a meme that has now repeated, makes me gleeful.

I wonder what the Doctor will do in PII? I'm starting to think that maybe it's the Doctor's decisions on that day in the past that will MAKE Davros into who he is...and not something else. Like the Doctor will leave him be as a child, but it will be the fact that he was there to begin with and did the random weird things he did that will cause Davros to do what he does...and would it not be some sort of sick poetic note if the Doctor holding the Dalek gun up and shouting "Exterminate" to Davros is what makes him program that word into the Dalek population?

Lots of interesting stuff. Can't wait till next weekend!

The Shadow Proclamation and the Judoon are, but I'm not sure / I don't remember who the Moldavium or the Witches of Karn are - can you give me a rundown? Are they even from New Who?

That should be Moldovarium...and it's a spacey-wacey waystation of randoms that used to be run by Dorium Maldovar (the chubby blue guy from Matt Smith's era, who ended up as a head in a box). The witches/Sisterhood of Karn are both old and NuWho. Karn is a satellite of Gallifrey, and is where the regeneration energy (the Sacred Flame, which produces the Elixir of Life) that the Time Lords use is supplied from. The Sisterhood looks after that power. They were featured in Classic Who as far back as the 4th Doctor story THE BRAIN OF MORBIUS. They have more recently shown up in the 50th prequel minisode NIGHT OF THE DOCTOR, and gave the Eighth Doctor the elixir to force a regeneration into the War Doctor (John Hurt)...and then their leader showed up more recently in the Series 9 Prologue. But yeah basically they keep the regeneration energy and have been doing so for untold centuries.

She's a MOST enjoyable incarnation of The Master.

Did anyone else get the vibe that the reason Missy wanted Clara out of the way at the end was because SHE wanted to travel with the Doctor?
