It's extra special effects costs they didn't need, and with an 80minute premiere already filled with special effect shots, the Beeb probably decided to get rid of unneeded stuff like that.

Well that was a bit boring to be honest... However I think Capaldi and Coleman should work quite well together so I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. This episode just felt a bit flat and somewhat disjointed plot wise...

I know the discussion upthread explained it but I still groaned with the preview about the Daleks for the next episode...

A few notes (bearing in mind that I met Matt Smith this afternoon, got my photo taken with him, a Q&A with Smith and Arthur Darvill) on tonight's new ep.

A. Capaldi is going to take some getting used to. We've gone from kinetic, charming, fast-talker Smith, to really slow long scenes with almost grinchy delivery. It's quite jarring.

B. A dark Doctor almost on par with the War Doctor in the whole "He was dead anyways, I was saving us" mentality. Which is very un-Doctorlike. And hard to handle. The closest we got in the past few years would be Tennant in RUNAWAY BRIDE when he was willing to let the Queen of the Racknoss burn and Donna made him dial it back. But yeah, not easy to get on board with.

C. Loved Danny Pink's intro, but I think they are telegraphing the whole "soldier" thing.

D. I'm now unsure if Danny or Missy is the Master, but I'm guessing 1 of them is.

E. I miss Matt Smith.

There have been a few script mentions, but nothing that's occured phsically on-screen in any particular story.

And to be honest, the way that Moffat mocks the idea of the Doctor changing genders in interviews (I believe his comment was something like "why don't you just make Queen Elizabeth a man"), I don't see it happening in his tenure as show runner.

Though I wouldn't put it past him to do it to the Master.

Both my wife and I don't wish the Doctor to be a woman. There are plenty of female time lords to plumb and put into story, Romana, Rani, or even a new character. I'd MUCH rather see another heroic original time lord female then see a gender swaped Doctor to appease some fans.

The other thing we agreed upon is that after Capaldi, the show is going to skew to a younger Doctor again. Tennant and Smith were enormously popular...and I fear that fandom is already kind of stifling excitement on Capaldi. I like the darker, older Doctor too....but I'd be REALLY lying if I said I didn't prefer a younger man in the role. But that's just my own personal preference based on my years as a Whovian (beginning with Davison and McGann being faves of mine both also younger).

I recently re-watched the last couple of seasons. In the Doctor's Wife: "described the Corsair as both male and female in the same sentence, implying one of his regenerations had already been female"

BK, it's 50 years old. Nobody except QT knows all that much of the history. For my own, I simply ignore the first 8 and hit up the Tardis Core wiki when I need to. I'm sure I'm missing lots of references, such as "the circles" running gag about the walls of the tardis but *shrug*. Not a lot can be done about that.

I love Capaldi, and I'm probably in the minority camp who wanted a darker less daft Doctor this time around. Nothing wrong with Tennant or Smith (although I still favour Ecclestone a bit) but it's a good breath of fresh air I think.

There's not a chance of the Doctor being female in Moffatt's tenure. I'm not really sure where I sit with it, it's a pointless move if it's merely appeasement and it's the sort of thing I'd like to see done for a really good plot reason (not a clue what that could be though) rather than thrown in "just because".

Missy > Mistress > Master wasn't something I'd put together, but I like the idea. I just hope it isn't River Song.

Less daft, and far better because of it IMO. I could never put my finger on why, but for whatever reason I was never even slighly inclined to watch Smith's Doctor despite avidly following the Ecclsston and Tennant episodes, but from what snippets and adverts I saw Daft was definetly the primary characteristic of Smiths run. (I seem to remember something about flying sharks?)

A female doctor would be a sight to see if it was done well, the manic energy of the doctor, the wit and sarcasm in the deadly situations, Zoey Deschanel or someone like that would be AMAZING. But then so could a more forceful presence, imagine Anna Gunn in that role hopefully if it ever does happen the director/producers/writers don't sexualise the Doctor, that would miss the point entirely IMO.

Oh god Tilda Swinton would be brilliant. No matter who it was though, it would need to be handled correctly, and Moffat is someone I am almost certain couldn't pull it off.

(Full disclosure, I only know Zoey's name from Fatman on Batman where she was suggested for playing Harley in a live action version of the character and that particular sense of humour and manner that Harley has (minus the accent) would translate very well into the doctors universe)

Terrible idea probably: They could do something where the Doctor has a straight male companion who wants to seduce alien women like Kirk for half a season, and it's all weird because there's absolutely no romantic tension between the Doctor and his companion like there has been for the last billion years, and then he regenerates into a woman and there is a ton of slapstick between her and the still-present womanizer companion.

Absolutely loving the new darker Doctor. The flippant reaction to the soldier girl's brother and later comrade dying were great moments.

"He's the top layer if you want to say a few words..." was a brilliant line.

I love that the plan to make a good Dalek was ruined by the Doctor's own hate (which actually ties him in quite well with 9, 10 & 11 - Victory of the Daleks is probably the outright silliest NuWho episode but Smith was still pure hate at the sight of the Dalek.)

It's not that I don't want the Doctor to be a good guy - of course I do. I'm just ok with him having to rediscover some facets of that.

I think we might be seeing the idea (that never came to fruition) with Six (Colin Baker), in that we start with a Doctor who is cold, callous, and almost unapproachable....who slowly comes around and becomes the Doctor we know. That had been the plan for Sixie, that never happened. I'm cool wth that, if that's what we are going for.

I should note I LOVE the lines he says to Clara about "Do I pay you enough?"....hilarious. I also loved the slap. He needed that.

OK this episode was a ton better. The chemistry between the two is different enough to be fresh but similar enough to keep us happy. While I am not a fan of daleks I thought the idea of trying to change a dalek literally from the inside was good and well executed. I like the soldier/teacher guy, Mr Pink, I foresee a tragic but heroic death for him, probably not long after he has finally opened up to Clara and confessed his love.

Indeed. I think the best bit being that the Dalek sees hatred inside the Doctor and that's what sends him in a specific direction. It should be noted that in the original script Rusty goes back to the Dalek ship and self destructs. I'm interested they chose to keep him alive. I would absolutely LOVE to see Rusty the Dalek later on in the series sacrifice himself for humans or for the "cause" and have the Doctor's mind be altered about Daleks if even a little. Since the Daleks are basically the Nazis, it would be really cool to see a post-WWII mentality.


A good episode, but I'm still jarred by Capaldi's portrayal. You really can't tell from a Dalek epsidoe unfortunately becuase the Doctor has such vehement anger to them. Hopefully Mark Gatiss next ep is more defining.

Also, we still haven't heard a proper Twelve piece of score (like Eleven's A MADMAN WITH A BOX, or Ten's ALL THE STRANGE STRANGE THINGS).

I suspect the tune that kicked in in the first ep when the Doctor revealed himself in the cave will prove to be 12's theme. Maybe.

Yeah that is the piece of music I always think of for Matt Smiths Doctor.
