All three of those speeches are really top Smith moments. In fact, it is his Rings Of Ahkaten speech that STILL brings me very close to tears. It's gorgeously written, and Matt delivers it with perfection.

I'll add this one...because it was a great farewell speech.

It's amazing how good the Rings of Akhaten speech was considering how shit the rest of that episode was.

It's also interesting how many of his grand speeches - including two of the ones you linked up there - actually ended in failure. I have to wonder if Moffat did it on purpose- I can't remember all of them off the top of my head now, but I know there were others, like the rant in Victory of the Daleks.

The thing about Smith, though, was that even in the less impressive episodes, he always seemed to have at least one really great moment. Like this:

And he seems to have great screen chemistry with everyone he's ever met, an underrated quality in an actor.

The Pandorica speech - see here:

Damn you. Watch that clip --> google for episode number --> search torrents folders --> "waste" 2 hours watching 1, 12, and 13.

I've decide that in Ep 13 at the wedding when Gillian says "you absolutely definitely may kiss the bride", she is possibly the most gorgeous creature ever.

I'll admit something. I never glommed onto Amy as companion (not like I did with Rose or Donna)...and all through her run I mostly was like "Yeah, she's alright."...but when the apparition of her came down the TARDIS steps at the end of THE TIME OF THE DOCTOR....I openly wept like a little kid. So I think she had a much bigger affect on me than I knew, it just wasn't something tangible that I was able to blatantly realize.

I liked Amy because, especially in her first series, she was so blatantly a few guppies short of an aquarium, but without making her stereotypically TV-mad kookyness. It's heavy material for Doctor Who that's never directly addressed, but she's an obviously damaged person hiding the damage beneath a facade of attitude. And Karen Gillan can act.

Totally spot on. Agreed. In hindsight, I thin she's one of my fave companions because of that.

Plus, the mental damage was the Doctor's fault, so it's a nice interplay to have him stay around her for so long.

Actually, re: Amy, someone upthread in here mentioned it way back.

The episode "the beast below" her speech about the Doctor nails the character pretty well (very old, very kind, etc)

And the whole speech leading into "something old, something new" was pretty great as well.

found a version of it that looks like it was recorded on a potato, but it'll do:

I cut that scene down with a video editor. But it was flagged as soon as I put it on youtube. ;)

One led to the other. She's the best actress who has ever lived or she fully intended to jump his bones right there right then. Or some combination.

The Sixties – Thursday, August 14
This documentary series airing strangely enough on CNN is produced by Tom Hanks and examines the pivotal decade that was the 1960s through archival footage and interviews with journalists and historians including David McCullough, Robert Dallek, Robert Caro, Dan Rather, and Robert MacNeil. The final episode promises to explore the sex, drugs, and rock and roll that influenced the Baby Boomer generation.

I might have officially become a whonut. Reading that, I first thought "Dr. Who" then "great historian". And history was half my dual major.

Cool clips.

I like the bit where he says Clara "cares for him so he doesn't have to"

It's also nice to note the lack of Smith or Tennant's Kinetics in the character. More calm and controlled. Deliberate almost.

Capaldi's going to be a big, but probably welcome, change.

This may have been discussed already. If so, I missed it so discuss it again :):

Is Tasha Lem from Time of the Doctor going to turn out somehow to be River Song??

It's assumed to be her in a more obvious way, since the library ship is the same library computer that River was "saved" into by Tennant. Tasha Lem is just the avatar she chooses to appear to Eleven outsdie of the library. All her dialogue about him is very much River. So yeah, and I tjhink I read somewhere Moffat said he made it about as blatant as he dared and that it wasn't meant as a mystery but a nod to the beginning of the characrer (in the library) and her end (as Eleven finally regenerates) bringing things around full circle.

Really? While it's a possibility, I see no actual hint of that at all.

There's things wrong with that theory anyway. The first of which is that if she was a projection of some kind, I don't see how the Daleks would have been able to take her over in the way they did, and the second being that she appeared to be seeing him as 11 for the first time.

But then, the whole entire premise of him knowing her before makes no sense, in terms of the way the Silence were presented before. Surely the minute they showed up he'd have gone running to her?

Honestly she's a crap character and I hope she never comes back. Even though if she is River that would at least give Moffatt a chance to redeem the mess that was made of her character after A Good Man Goes to War. River's story should be done- they had the great goodbye and everything. Don't cheapen it ffs.

He cheapened it the moment he started Series 6 and kept going with her story. She was SO much better as a mystery.

But anyways, I said she was an "avatar" not a projection. :)

We will be at the cottage...but thankfully the cottage is really a country home and has speedy Wifi...but also satellite TV. So I've just made the friends who are coming up aware that from 8PM to 9-ish, they are not allowed to bother me.

You do know it's a double episode, right? 80 minutes.

So more like 8-9.30ish.
