More news on missing episodes: Phil Morris, the guy who found the previous nine, told actor Julian Glover at a recent event that there would be some 'good news' for him soon. Glover - currently in GAME OF THRONES as Pycelle - played Richard the Lionheart in the William Hartnell story THE CRUSADE, of which two episodes remain missing. THE CRUSADE is one of several stories, along with MARCO POLO and THE MASSACRE (amongst others), that has been reported as having been found, but no announcement has yet been made because the BBC have not formally okayed or completed restoring them yet.

That he dedicated his life to saving people in an effort at redemption/ ease his conscience was an interesting theme. I won't tell you you're wrong, but only because Moffat really confused this point so I'm not entirely sure how it works

But there appear to be two possibilities:

1. The War Doctor did destroy Gallifrey and the Daleks, burning all of them, and witnessed it with his own eyes. Shortly afterwards he regenerated into Eccleston etc etc. However, after regenerating into the 10th and 11th, the Moment was able to change history to bring them into contact with the War Doctor, whereupon they altered the decision and saved Gallifrey instead. So in this instance, Gallifrey was destroyed but the Moment changed history so it wasn't.

2. It never happened and the Doctors always saved Gallifrey, but due to timey wimey they didn't have memories of doing it. This is contradicted by the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors all saying they have very firm memories of seeing Gallifrey 'burning', which is rather different to 'vanishing in a flash of light'. Unless they were just being poetic about it.

I'm just getting into Doctor Who - just finished Season 3 of the reboot last night. I watched all of Torchwood a couple of years ago, so really I should have gotten around to Doctor Who a while back, but I hadn't yet... Anyway, cause I haven't seen most of the reboot yet, I'm not reading much of this thread until I've caught up to everyone, but I just wanted to say...

Yeah, that was a really nice clever reveal....the reason for which I BELIEVE is only mentioned IN TORCHWOOD when someone asks about him every dying and the theory is that he will continue to slowly age...which makes total sense. And yeah, amusingly, I THINK Harkness's theme in DW is the same theme as the FACE OF BOE just slowed down and slightly rearranged for the latter. Tricky Mr. Murray Gold!

And yeah, John Simm's chews it up as The Master.

And I ADORE the scene with Tennant and Simm where Ten is screaming at him to regenerate...because he knows that if his old childhood friend, yet constant enemy, the Master dies...he really will be the last of the Timelords...and it's like losing family. Gods that scene gets me every time!

Oh and in case you wonder...Dan Abnett wrote a whole book about Martha's "year" away saving the Doctor called THE YEAR OF MARTHA. Worth a read.

I really enjoy the whole 'Fixed Point in Time' thing, plus, I mean, Jack Harkness is the bee's knees you guys! He's just awesome sauce!

Also, also, how cool is it that the actress who plays Gwen on Torchwood is the same actress who plays Gwynn in the Doctor Who episode where we learn how the Rift under Cardiff came to be? I love this series for little Easter eggs like that! Plus we go to see Tosh at one point too during Season 1 or 2. Do we ever get to see Owen in the Doctor Who series? He was my favourite in Torchwood, the crazy mofo.

Ianto and Gwen are the only other TORCHWOOD alum who make DW appearances other than Jack and Martha, both appear in the same ep (final two-part finale of S4). Owen never makes a further appearance on DW. As to Spacial genetic multiplicity thing...Apparently We got that with Amy Pond (S5-7 companion) who was also an ancient Roman acolyte/priestess in the S4 ep THE FIRES Of POMPEII...and it will also bear some sort of weight on Peter Capaldi being the face of the Twelfth Doctor since he is ALSO in that episode as an ancient Roman. The only other one I can think of is that Colin Baker once portrayed a random guard on Classic Who before eventually becoming the Sixth Doctor.

But, erm, yes, there's also the guy who's going to play the next Doctor after Matt Smith dies - he was John Frobischer in Season 3 of Torchwood, and, apparently, played a minor character sometime during the season proper.

Anyway, re: Torchwood references, I totally geek out anytime there's a reference that only someone who's actually seen Torchwood could get. Like, did you notice that the first woman we see changed into a Cyberman in Alternate Earth during Season 2 is actually the same actress as the Cyberman, Lisa, that Ianto is secretly trying to save in Torchwood? Things like that make me squee with delight everytime they pop up!

It's actually not the same actress, in that S2 ep of DW and the CYBERWOMAN ep of TW.

I agree with how Season 4 of Torchwood went. The story had potential, but they had to stretch it over too many episodes. I think if it had been a 6 episode series like Season 3 was, it would have been much better.

has only existed in new Who. He's been running around saving people/planets for centuries prior to the Time Wars because he's a meddling old sod.

Agree it does make it somewhat lighter in tone though.

Like I said not massive who fan (only seen most of the new who and a handful of the old ones that were on BBC2 after the Simpsons when I was a kid) but it was just a deeper feel to his character. Like one inescapably horrible greater good moment that became the crux and motivation of his character, which I think they summed up well with Tennant being bitter towards Hurt's War Doctor and Smiths light hearted ignorance is bliss sort of approach. Took the edge off is all.

My reading of Smith's performance is not that it was light-hearted ignorance, more that it was repression. The Tenth, is the one who remembers and can't forget (although imo, it should really have been the Ninth but unfortunately Chris Ecclestone wants nothing to do with it, so what can you do?), the Eleventh is the one who tries very, very hard not to remember, but still can't forget. I think he very much knew the answer to the War Doctor's question of how many children had died on Gallifrey, he almost certainly remembered counting when he was the Tenth, but answering it truthfully would have been admitting, to himself (as it were) more than anyone else, that he really hadn't, as he said, moved on. That he wasn't really the person he thought he should be. And that would have shattered all his own, carefully nurtured, illusions about who he was/is. So he pretended he'd forgotten and let himself be castigated by his previous self rather than face his own self-perceived weakness.

tbh I was pretty satisfied with them laying the Gallifrey plotline to rest. The Doctor is The Man Who Makes People Better, in this case it was himself. He always comes up with a Third Way, a better way. It's what he's for. And he had had 400 years or so to think about it. It's time, I think, for The Doctor and Doctor Who to move on.

According to Eccleston, there was a culture he didn't like in making the show. He's specified things like a director going really ape on a prop guy for a very minor mistake (like, Christian Bale levels of nuttery) and behaving in a bullying manner, and nothing was done about it (presumably when Eccleston himself raised the issue).

According to some others, Eccleston was, more simply, unhappy with the workload. WHO films for between 9 and 10 months a year and the Doctor is in the majority of scenes. It's an enormous workload, certainly unlike anything else in British TV drama. Combined with his fear of typecasting, Eccleston simply didn't want to do more than a year and only did that because of his friendship with Russell T. Davies (forged whilst making the mini-series THE SECOND COMING). Of course, both stories could be accurate at the same time, with incidents such as the above encouraging Eccleston to leave after his only season on the show. The workload theory is also backed up by Eccleston only appearing in the first season of HEROES before likewise bailing.

More recently, apparently Eccleston was willing to do the 50th anniversary (in which case he'd presumably have replaced Hurt) but Moffat was unwilling to meet his terms (whatever they were). Another producers was happy to do so, leading to a massive public argument between the two producers and the other one leaving the show.

Certainly drama seems to follow whenever Eccleston is dealing with WHO
