Capaldi is already the best of the nuWho by a massive margin

Needs to ditch Clara though.

yeah.

Tangerine ALWAYS shows up in the stocking.

My parents still do that for me and i'm 34

Originally stems from wartime rationing (WW2) when fruit was massively difficult to get hold of.

As such a piece of fruit at Christmas was a BIG deal.

This tradtiion made its way over to Canada as well, as my parents have done it since I was little, and my wife and I now do it for each other. I assume it came from my British grandparents on both sides.

...and finished the season. That was probably my favorite of the Christmas specials. Indeed I am very impressed how well this season came off. Now the long wait for S9....
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Rumour Mill:

Faye Marsaye's character of Shona Mculllough (aside from nods like her Christmas list, the obvious closing scene want of a better life, and the trying to stay in the sleigh longer) is rumoured to be possibly returning (either in a guest capacity, or a new companion full stop) as eagle-eye people have linked her line in LAST CHRISTMAS calling the Doctor a "Magician" to the revealed title of the first ep of Series 9 THE MAGICIAN'S APPRENTICE.

It's possible, and I'd love it. Other than Capaldi, Shona was the shining star of the Christmas ep, so I'd be on board for this to happen. We shall see. For the time being Clara is still around, so maybe both women would be in the TARDIS if this happens?

Just re-watched LAST CHRISTMAS again, and I think it's safe to say that it's my fave Capaldi episode full stop. Everything that he became in his incarnation of the Doctor (which began to solidify in the sesond half of S8, MUMMY-onwards) solidified and was on display on the Xmas ep. Just so entertaining to watch throughtout! I don't often by the BluRay for single eps (as they aways end up on the folliwng seaosn box sets) but I'll be buying this one to rewatch til Series 9 debuts.

Good ending to a season that nearly lost me. I wonder if that's the last we'll see of the Master?

I don't believe for a second that the Doctor & Clara are done.

Missy could very well have survived. All the other people that were disintegrated throughout the episode went up in a puff of red smoke, whereas Missy disappeared in a puff of blue smoke, so I'm assuming that she survived somehow.

I just assumed it was a different type of weapon that was used. As in, Missys phone zapper thing shot a red beam but Missy was killed by a Cyberman who shoot blue beams.

You could be right though!

Well, that death was short lived.

The wife and I are re-watching DW Series 8 on BluRay, a couple of eps at a time. We are up to TIME HEIST and I finally realized something I didn't really notice or connect before.

Twelve to start out is cold, calculating, and any semblances of heartfelt, and human niceties or normal interaction with humans (Clara included) the way we might have seen from Ten and Eleven are completely gone, right?

Well I've noticed that Moffat kind of did a shrewd thing with the eps as a result, whether this was communicated to all the writers or not - but it’s more clear on a re-watch.

Each ep has a character or two who acts to Clara (and others) with the heartfelt heroic human stuff that is missing from the veneer of Twelve as he starts out. All the Ten & Eleven stuff is given to other humans AROUND him instead.

DEEP BREATH – This one is easy, it’s the Paternoster Gang and then Eleven himself calling from Trenzalore.

INTO THE DALEK – Journey Blue

ROBOTS OF SHERWOOD – Robin Hood

LISTEN – Orson Pink (and to an extent, Clara herself)

TIME HEIST – Saibra and Psi

THE CARETAKER – Danny Pink

KILL THE MOON – This one is interesting and is the turning point in the series for this feature…as it SEEMS as if Captain Lundvist is the hero, heartfelt human…but in the end it’s ACTUALLY the Doctor as he realizes what the moon is.

MUMMY ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS – This is the most visible ep where Twelve’s humanity-bone is growing and he’s being affected by the previous people in that role, as in this ep it’s him who’s the humanistic hero, full out, fighting for everyone else, and even tries to sacrifice himself to stop the mummy.

FLATLINE – Rigsy and the Doctor

IN THE FOREST OF THE NIGHT – The Doctor proves himself to be a BETTER guardian to humans than either Danny OR Clara on their field trip.

DARK WATER / DEATH IN HEAVEN – The Doctor and Clara share the hero/heartfelt/Human saviour duties in this, with a previous hero, Danny Pink making the final sacrifice.

LAST CHRISTMAS – All the Doctor all the time, from beginning to end. Even Santa Claus in the end, who comes from the Doctor's subconscious, is heroic.

So the progression set up her to me is that someone ALWAYS has the hero/humanity button on, it’s just split amongst other people for the first half of the season. Almost as a teaching system for a newly regenerated/New Regeneration cycle Doctor - that he slowly comes around and sees and then very gently (almost deceptively) adds it to his character in dribs and drabs.

I think you’ll agree that the Twelve we see in DEEP BREATH & INTO THE DALEK is a completely different individual from the one we see in LAST CHRISTMAS.

And I think the above notion is the reason/script way for that.

In hindsight it’s absolutely genius, and I applaud Moffat's Series 8 as a result. Probably some of his finest work as showrunner. He let the writers do what they do best, and he made no attempt to make the companion some huge mystery...instead he chose an RTD-like soft mystery of Missy and Paradise for an over-arcing Series plot. If I didn't love Series 5 so unabashedly, I might say Series 8 is Moffat's finest.

Doctor Who newb here. I just finished watching the 2005 season. It's pretty good. I'm curious see what happens with the new Doctor. Will be posting back every once and while, but not reading a lot as I don't want to spoil anything.

Is she as completely oddball as she always comes across in interviews? Seriously, she makes Jeniffer Lawrence look the height of media-trained polish.

No, she was genuine and sweet and not at all odd. She seemed overwhelmed and humbled by the amount of people who waited to see her and get photos or autographs.

So... Queen Victoria just banished Rose and the Doctor. I'm liking David Tennant's Doctor.

Question about the earlier series, is Bad Wolf a carry-over plot? I found it interesting that 2 episodes in to the new Doctor and the adversary is a big, bad werewolf.
