  • I want LARGER FORMAT books

  Posted 19 December 2008 - 03:26 AM

I am just starting the second book "Deadhouse Gates" that I picked up at a local used bookstore and I really like the fact that this copy is much larger than your typical paperback. I have been told that the format is called Trade Paperback but I am not sure if that is correct. Basically instead of the usual 4 by 6 inch size this copy is 6 by 9 inches in size and I can actually read it without creasing the spine or breaking the book in two.

Does anyone know if the latter books come in this format? I have a hard time trying to hold a six hundred plus page book in one hand while reading without busting the spine in two. Plus I would like to keep the books in a uniform size for storing reasons.

I have tried both Amazon and the TOR websites but neither offer any help. Thout you all would be my best bet. Thanks for any info you can offer. Sorry for the US increments. Lost my ruler that had cm on it.

I believe that if it just says "paperback" on amazon.co.uk that it's the trade paperback - the regular paperbacks are called "mass market" paperbacks.

But what size would those books be in the UK?

hmm
try chapters.com /ca, if you're from North America
I'm fairly certaint they carry Trade paperbacks for most of the books, definitely starting with tBH.
Starting with RG, in North America at least, all new book releases (RG, NoK, TtH) were in trade paperback
RotCG came out in both, I think, but there was some story involved with its release and amajor delay, too.

so yeah, I realise i'm rambling, but if you're in US or Canada my advice is to try the Chapters/Indigo/Coes website.
if you're in the UK, there's another book chain that UK-ers here constantly refer to (Borders?), you may want to try that.

Amazon.com listings for a particular print format almost always provide links to other formats (if available). For instance, the listing for the paperback version of _The Bonehunters_ includes "Other Editions: Hardcover, Mass Market Paperback, Library Binding".

The Trade paperback is the one you're refering to. They're usually of the same dimensions as the hardback, but with card covers - and a lower price.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Ment is correct about Chapters carrying the trade paper backs. The only copies of mine that are not trade paperback are GoTM and DG. For buyer's in Canada and the U.S. McNally Robinson carries tpb copies of TTH and RoCG as well, unfortunately the earlier MBoTF books they carry are mass market.

I've seen trade paperbacks (TPBs) of all the books in the series, barring GotM -- usually at used book stores like Half Price Books. I see the newer volumes in TPB at Barnes & Noble all the time (heck, I saw the TPBs of RG and TtH there just last night) though I haven't seen them carry the hardcovers at all. You can also order the TPBs from just about any online bookseller.

From what I've read, you get the same quality book in a TPB as with a HC, but with a less expensive binding. Myself, I prefer either the durability of a HC or the portability of a MMPB, but darn if the Tor TPB of TtH isn't gorgeous.

Well I've seen them all in trade and I have all but 2 in this format, however they are usually limited runs and the earlier ones are somewhat sought after so you would either br lucky or unlucky trying to find the entire series in trade format. Very few will be available new I would say.

I only got RG in trade, TtH is hardback and all the rest mmpb.
As cougar said, unless you get them early they're very hard to get in trade, you migth have to resort to ebaying or some such to get them all in Trade. good luck with it though, I'm somewhat irritated with myself for not getting them all in mmpb to keep the shelf looking pretty.

Ditto. I'm also in the US, and I've seen TPBs of all except GotM, and no hardcovers. I prefer MMPBs, but for some reason starting with HoC, they stopped using that fancy font fo the chapter headings and the appendices. The TPBs still use that font, but the MMPBs don't after MoI.

That still bugs the heck out of me. Also the lettering is much finer; not as dark, and harder to read by dim light. My theory is that they're just 'porting' over the UK MMPB version -- font selection and everything -- with no changes.

I have DG, MoI, HoC ,MT and RG in Trade form. I almost bought GotM in Trade and them thought better of it, so I have that in the MMpbk I bought much later. The others I have in hardback.

The only disadvantage to the trades or hardbacks that I find is that the things are like bloody housebricks; which makes carting them around to read on the bus or tram a bit of a pain.
