my thoughts thus far, at about 160 pages in

I am about 160 pages in, and I am really enjoying the book. I enjoy reading Parans sections the most thus far. I dont find it to be a hard read, and I like that you have to figure things on your own. I can already see the jigsaw falling into place (Hey a Radiohead refrence:)) I dont really have any complaints yet. Save one. I do not like Tattersails deck reading scenes. I find them lame. But thankfully they are short. Its clear to me thats going to be an important part of the book, but as I said the bits are brief enough that I can plow through them and get back to the goodie.

Excellent
Most people who have problems with the book encounter them fairly early on, so if you're past that, you should be fine

Sounds like you're doing fine so far, not to worry about the deck. The references to it are a bit obscure at the outset but it plays a bigger more interesting part further on.

Its not the obscurity of the refrences that is the issue thus far. I just find her internal monologue a bit lame during those sequences. Still as I said its a minor issue.
I actually dig it enough that I talked my cousin into starting GotM.

Well I think you'll enjoy the deck-readings a lot more later on in the series when a much-loved character is drunkenly making up the way (s)he lays them as (s)he goes along...

Well I personally am 64 pages into the book. I somewhat know what's going on, but I have to admit I'm a bit lost and slightly overwhelmed, but I'll keep plugging away.
"Ignoring him, she stepped back out of the ellipse and began singing in the Woman's Language, which was, of course, unintelligible to Iskaral's ears. Just as the Man's Language-which Mongora called gibberish-was beyond her ability to understand. The reason for that, Iskaral Pust knew, was that the Man's Language was gibberish, designed specifically to confound women."

you're only 64 pages into the first book but you've already joined a forum dedicated to the series universe? That's ambition.

Keep it up Esoteric, most people are intially overwhelmed the fist time they read SE. It will all start to come together and eventually you'll get used to the pace. It'll be well worth the confusion by the time you get to the end.

When I first look into starting a series I tend to look up information on it. This looked like a pretty decently made message board which impressed me. So yes, I actually joined this message board before I read a single line from one of the books. Haha.
I'm still at the same point in the book because I've been so busy...Holidays and all...and my Birthday is tomorrow haha.

Well, hey, happy birthday!
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

'Aye.' It's a good word. I think. More a whole attitude than a word, really. With lots of meaning in it, too. A bit of 'yes' and a bit of 'well fuck' and maybe some 'we're all in this together.' So a word to some up the Malazans. <Sunrise>

I'm a first time reader and I have read just about 400 pages. I absolutely love this book and cannot put it down. I, unlike some others, love the somewhat large cast of characters, though initially I thought I wouldn't because I thought that that would mean they would be underdeveloped. I was wrong, and they are all great and very interesting characters. Thank you SE for such a great book. Time to go read. >_>

QUOTE (Stalker @ Jan 23 2009, 01:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."
I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

So how much more have you new guys read up to now?
That is kinda cool joining the site before reading anything set in this world. Big leap of faith.

Things for me as everyone else have been busy lately so I'm only 408 pages in. I'm still really enjoy it. I do prefer the Darujhistan chapters to the empire chapters. I can say for certain that I will finish this series.

You prefer the Daru chapters? Really? I much prefered the soldiers and the gods scenes. I never really liked Crokus.
