Maybe it's Rud Ellal then... (or however it's spelt)

Note: This is also not a well-thought-through theory

Oh you foolish mortals. Do you not recall Menandore having a secret meeting with Hood and Shadowthrone? And then when she's about to die she turns on Sheltatha instead of trying to escape? Someone who would rather die with her sister then flee and fight another day would not have lived this long in the first place. She's cut a deal with Hood and ST to have QB there to ass-kick herself and her sisters but her deal with Hood means she isn't going to have died somehow. Hood gets to claim the funtastic souls of Sheltatha and Sukul, ST gets control of the gate, though he promised not to use it personally.

She makes her deal with Hood and ST around page 125 in my trade-paperback RG.

Then on p. 795:
"True, one or two of them might fall. But not Menandore. She had plans to ensure that she would survive."

So...she made a deal not to have her soul taken by hood when she died?

Man. If I knew I was going to die, that it was a foregone conclusion, I'd go out with a bang. Cussers in my shoes, doncha know.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

If this is true, then I again feel that Erikson is slipping. He didn't do a good job of making that obvious in her behaviour or in the evidence afterwards. Was she the one who fought the Soletaken last?

I think D'rek has taught us one thing, here. Everyone needs to go home and read RG again and not come back into the world until we're done. Seriously I want to read that again. For sure Menandore will be back if that is the case. Still though, the HoL? don't think so. It was definitely some new guy we'll see later, like the Liosan version of Tulas Shorn

Well I was thinking something crazy like she went off the radar and usurped the Tiste Liosan and took over the entirety of the Light and Kural Thyrllan and Kurald Liosan and such, and thereby somehow got control of them. It's crazy but it could happen.

OR even better, by dying she went to some super Light-aspected prison, but her deal allowed her to escape from this place, and when she left she brought the Hounds with her!

Baseless ludicrous speculation is fun!

I thought this referred to Mendandore having her back protected by her son

Well dude. The master of the HoS only showed up in TTH and we had no idea anyone like Tulas even existed until then. It's entirely possible we'll see another light dude.

On a somewhat side note, do you recall that in TBH prologue, Dejim remembers about the Master of the Hounds of Darkness, which, in the context, is clearly not Dessimbelackis. I think we still don't know who that guy might be. It cant be Tulas, as he was only involved with the HoS and anyway he must have been already dead by the time of the First Empire.

At this point she's already chatted with Rud and knows Rud is escorting the Imass (minus Ulshun) out of the area.

Well Tulas says he was the first master of the Hounds, and also hints that he once ruled Shadow (either all of it or the part of it that Kellenvad rules) by stating that he was of a mind to take on Kel&Danc, saying he's learned a lot since last time. So, if the two were to go hand-in-hand, it could just mean that the master of the Hounds of Shadow is whoever is on the Throne of Shadow, which seems pretty straightforward to me!

I wonder if the Hounds would be more powerful or whatever if a Tiste sat on their respective Thrones? There have been...implications.

Umm.. I was referring to the Deragoth and their master (mentioned in the TBH prologue). Not the HoS or whoever sat on the Throne of Shadow at the time (probably no one)

Righto, foolish me.

Well the Deragoth are conflicting in that sometimes they seem not to have anything to do with Darkness at all (Osserc says he made up the name for no good reason; there used to be a whole species of them, not just 7, etc), but then other times they seem to be just like the HoS, but for Dark. I suppose they *could* have a master either way...

If that's true, then wouldn't that verify that there ARE Hounds of Darkness of one sort or another out there?

Who knows? Heck, Tulas blithely mentioned Hounds of Death too...

This is cool. I was expecting Light hounds to show up after seeing shadows and dark ones sooner or later.

Now we have death dogs too?

Funny.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

Right?
