i'm having a hard time getting ahold of a copy of Blade of Tyshalle, my local bookstore's supplier is Permanently-Out-of-Stock, which kinda made me a little sad, knowing how good Heroes Die and MWStover is, so to complete my read, i resorted to an Epub copy, just to read this, and i may amazon this in the near future, or is it also hard to comeby via amazon? as i already have Caine Black Knife TPB and Caine's Law on pre-order,,

Yup, BoT is out of print (and has been for some time.) Pretty much your only option besides ebook is to find a secondhand copy. I've found 3-4 at the used bookstore that I've picked up for people on this board. Yuna, I'll add you to The List. (Keep in mind I come across only one, maybe two copies a year.)

Blade of Tyshalle is back in-print, though only in the UK and only in e-book. You can try ordering the ebook from Amazon.co.uk, as sometimes they are available in the USA but it seems to be a bit hit-and-miss.

Finished Heroes Die last night...wow what a book!!

I'd not heard of them until I saw Wertheads review as they've only recently been released in the UK

Caine's a really interesting character but equally so is Hari.

I definitely got a 'Witcher' vibe from the book, with the whole non-human's being 2nd rate citizens and I think Caine shares some similarities with Geralt of Rivia.

Right I'm off to amazon to get stuck into the 2nd one...only £3.99...seems like a good deal to me...

Finished the fourth book last week.

A phenomenal book in my opinion perhaps only let down by the lack of any real antagonist or sense of urgency and danger. I thought the ending was wrapped up a little too "And they lived happily ever after" for my tastes but it sure was a hell of a ride.

Looking at Cain Black Knife and Caine's Law as one book it seems like these two were all about Cain seeking some kind of redemption, which is fine, I just strongly dislike that he actually seemed to get that redemption in the end. The way the book starts. With Cain dragging his badly broken, dying body up the side of a mountain was how I wanted the book to end. Cain fighting to the death to get his way. What we got instead, when you look past the very personal analysis of Cains life, was more like a gigantic rolling deus ex machina story line. Everything that takes place, or had taken place, or would take place, was if I understand it correctly, orchestrate by Meta Cain using his deal with the nasty god to unmake reality and make it into something better. A nice idea and very well executed as a plot point and a jump in narrative and timelines. How ever what I was missing was some opposition. Proper opposition. Why the hell did we never see Dal'kanith Thousand hands or one of his "enforcers" show up in the timeline to try and either stop Cain or change the outcome in the God Kings favor? All through the book Cain is hinting that what he is doing is super dangerous and problematic but the consequences of his machinations are never answered by the gods themselves which I think was a real disappointment. I guess it is implied that Dal'kanith himself wanted Cain to succeed to create balance and make sure that the universe didn't do a quantum crunch or something but I really missed a good antagonist in both Blackknife and Caine's Law. That was part of what made Heroes Die so good, Berne and Mael'Koth were two very excellent antagonists.

I didn't really understand how he fulfilled the role of the Sword of Man. Angvasse as the Hand of Khryll was an immortal killing machine able to fight and survive anything. What exactly did Cain ever get out of being the Sword of Man? A very strong will? Everyone was always shitting themselves over Cain's potential and his legacy but there was never any suggestion that Cain was an actual threat to anybody who knew he was coming. He was just a mortal man. I never understood all that black flow nonsense.

Also, all that bullshit about Caine doing it for love. Give me a fucking a break.

I wonder what the proposed sequels "Acts of Faith" would be about considering by the end of Acts of Cain, Cain is now an immortal buggyman that Duncan God can just clone indefinitely (if I understand what they did correct).

So I just fucking read Caine Fucking Black Fucking Knife and while obviously it's fucking awesome in a lot of fucking ways I couldn't help be a bit fucking fucking disappointed fucking.

Firstly the fact that it's only half a story was a bit fucking wank, wasn't it? I mean I don't mind books that are two halves of a whole when put together but this never really finishes, it just stops, and I wasn't aware that it was the first part of a story till "This continues in Acts of Atonement: Book Two on the final page", which made it a bit of a kick in the teeth that it builds up to this massive climax and then sneaks Caine off back to Earth just before it happens for a little conversation. Now I like subverted expectations, and obviously so does Stover, and once I got used to it Blade of Tyshalle did that in a good way, and the conversation itself was a great piece of writing but it's just... fucking blue-balls is the fucking word, isn't it. Plus it means nothing ever really coheres.

Secondly... well I hesitate to say it but it got a little bit samey. BoT came close to that, but there was enough variety to what was going on that it never got old, and having additional PoVs helped. Here, it's basically just a series of situations in which Caine gets into trouble and then kicks, punches, stabs and otherwise murders trouble until it goes away, or else just intimidates people. Which is fine, but is an approach that needs moderation, and when you compare Caine to other similar characters like Takeshi Kovacs or Jorg of Ancrath, they've just got a bit more variation to their game.


Those things said, it was still mostly fucking awesome. The complete tearing down of the Paladin cliche was pretty fucking funny (if not stunningly new) and the badassery was badass.
It's just I'm going to have to wait till I've read Caine's Law to know whether it really comes to anything...
