I tried this Fallout3 and I have to say, it didn't catch me very well. It is an okay game, but it has nothing on fallout1+2 to be honest.

You played Fallout 1+2? Those are among the best games ever made.

God I'm itching so bad to play again. I stopped completely once I reached level 20 in anticipation of the level cap removal in march.... The wait is unbearable!

Well, I finally broke down and rented Fallout 3.

First impressions are very very very good. I like it a LOT. In fact, my Fiancee was sick all day yesterday, so while I was bringing her soup and stuff I played for the ENTIRE day. Man, haven't done that in ages. Fully 8 hours of videogame immersion. Makes me feel bad for staring at a screen while typing this post.

I rented it because I knew I'd like it...I can't be getting into a game of Fallout 3's calibre at this time of year or I might as well kiss my life and health goodbye. I'll pick it up in the summer or something when I've got some more spare time kicking around.

Anyway, Completed most of the Megaton quests on the first day, but got bored of the stupid "fetch shit for my survival guide" quest and the woman's stupid voice...so I blew the shit out of Megaton. Let it be known the death of megaton and all its residents rests squarely on HER shoulders. Can't blame me for being psychotic.

So now I'm at tenpenny towers, which I assume to be another quest hub or something. Haven't fully figured it out yet. I raided a power plant by "minefield", killed about 15 zombies and a "Glowing One"...which was a tough fight at Level 3. He took almost all my uzi ammo and a bunch of energy cells. Let me make a small aside for the energy weapons. HOLY SHIT! FUCKING COOL!!! When you score a critical that kills an enemy and the bastard disintegrates a la "getting hit with a romulan disruptor on maximum"...I almost peed myself the first time it happened. Back to the main story though, I got something called a FISTO, which can only be described as "awesomesauce". When things get tight, I just whip out the fisto and dispense win.

I've got a week with the game, which will probably see me putting several more hours into it. Good thing is all my data will be saved so I can avoid the BS when I eventually rent or buy the game again.

Oh yeah, the supermarket level has got to be the best so far. Totally wicked.

One question, is this a game where money becomes trivial once you're about halfway through? That's what its like in Oblivion...once you're at about "glass armor" level, everything sells for retarded amounts of gold and you can just buy whatever you need without thinking. I kind of like in this one so far that I have to really watch my caps so that I have enough stims and money for repairs.

Things won't exactly get cheaper - but if you're like me and hoard anything you get near, you'll soon have so many caps you won't have anything to do with them. Except buying ammo, which I usually just get by swapping more loot for ammo.

My bigest problem with the game at the moment is bobby pins. I'm like down to my last 3 from the glorious hights of about 60. I just can not seem to pick a lock without breaking at least one even with my lockpick maxed out.. Thank god for force lock or I would have run out long ago.

Does anyone know how to get past a lock thats been broken though?

Unless you're referring to cheats, no, there is no way.

And the lockpicking, rather like in Oblivion, is more based on player skill than character skills. :)
Much improved over Oblivion's sytem, though.

Uhm. you could cheat. Quick Save before starting, try and if you fail Quick Load.

I found that you can attempt force lock and just press quick load untill it comes through.

I think I have 70 pins :)

I do the same with hacking. Quick save, try four likely words, quick load if it doesn't work.

Apt! I never would have put you down as one to sink so low!

If you're going to do that, you might as well open the console and do it that way....unless you're on a console. :)

Maybe it explains why I have so much ammo and caps.

On the other hand I hardly ever stole. People seemed to be able to look through walls and ceilings from a hundred yards.

Really? Stealing was easy for my evil character. Started with a decent sneak skill, mind. But it was most profitable just going through Megaton...

You'll be pleased to hear that if you blow megaton, Moira survives and turns up later as a ghoul! (In underworld, I think.) You can kill her all over again!

There is a perk you can get, in the later levels, that means you can force locks even when they're broken. There's an equivalent one for computer hacking. I can't remember what it's called, have a look through the list of perks though. I never needed it - I was always low on bobby pins, but I always found more just in time.

I managed to max out my lockpick skill, but it only gives you access to very hard locks, it doesn't make the lockpicking any easier.

As far as caps go - once you have the scavenger perk, you find loads (in lockers, mostly) and since there's bugger all to spend them on, they accumulate quickly. I had high repair skill though, so I didn't have to pay to repair my weapons, and I could make loads of caps selling fixed up miniguns etc.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

so I had a change of heart and decided to load up pre-megaton explosion. I wanted to complete the quest chains from there first for the hell of it. I've only got a week with the game, might as well play as much of it as I can.

Agree that the lockpick in Fallout kicks ass over the Oblivion system. The oblivion one is such a worthless pile of dogshit. Pisses me off every time I have to pick locks, until I'm able to get the unbreakable pick with +50 lockpick skillz.

So I was heading to the mirelurk lair for Ch 2 of moira's book and some little kid came out of nowhere asking me to save his dad from fire ants. This led to my hacking a computer terminal and needing to find out the cause of the fire ants in Marigold Station. It also led to me getting like 30 frag grenades/frag mines and proceeding to use them gratuitously on some large fire ants. I got to the bottom of the station at any rate and met a scientist guy who needs me to clear out 5 of the queen's defenders for him. I'm worried about this because handling 2 of these suckers at a time with my pitiful guns is damn near impossible. Is there any way to dual-wield 10mm pistols? Despite using them for repairs I always seem to have a lot of them. It would be nice to dual wield them and get more than 1 shot per plink in VATS.

Also, can I throw mini-nukes or do I need a launcher for em?

You need a launcher. I never got around to using my mini-nukes. Always expected the game would get insane at some point and they would be needed... then the game ended and I was all ???

Yeah, I went to all the trouble of getting that experimental one, the laucher that fires like 6 nukes all at the same time. Apart from using it to launch myself into the sky for laughs, I never did really need it.

I LOVED the mini Nuke. I had so much fun blowing up the Giant super mutants with it. As well as ambushing 10+ raiders with it.

Giant super mutants? As in plural? Isn't there just the one at the Radio Station?

christ, I just broke down and started searching ebay for cheap used fallout 3 discs.

Fucking canada never has anything good. You always have to get stuff from the states.

found one for $36, but they want 10 bucks to ship it. Should I go for it?

I'm just worried about the aftermath with my fiancee if I actually buy it. The debate in my brain is going crazy right now.
