Seriously, what? This is a German suicide and frankly, for me, it goes against the spirit of the game. You play to win, failing that, you play to survive. If you don't want to play anymore, don't submit moves, at least you give everyone an equal opportunity then.

Dkt & Tira in this game and Gavin in 2.0 (for nearly 5 months!) have spent entire games with 5 or less units and no prospect whatsoever of getting more supply centres, let alone a shot at victory yet they were/are soldiering on, and here it's thrown away, having a very serious impact on the game and its result. Why?

I completely agree, I was a bit pissed off when I read them, especially since he lasted most of dip 2 without submitting a move or suiciding.

Unfortunately it is a legitamate tactic, as the knowledge that a player is willing to suicide may affect future judgements of whether to stab them. It still sucks though.

Threatening to suicide to try and gain a lifeline in a tricky situation... entirely appropriate, kept me alive in 2.0 :)

Not questioning the legitimacy, just the spirit of it - in the end, Dip has only 1 winner or a winning coalition, a few survivors and a couple of people not on the board. Suiciding is losing.

As for just repayment of betrayal... maybe :) Dealing, wheeling and stabbing is all explicitly a part of the game as well, after all.

Yes, that's one approach. But, if you ever play it live: it's 'seize the advantage when you see it, if you don't, someone else will - usually your enemy'.
It's a dog-eat-dog world there, especially if you play it with people who know you well. If you read some of the tournament reports and anecdotes & strategies over at the diplomatic pouch, you'll see that it's stab or be stabbed there.

In every game I played here apart from this one (so that leaves the 2 speed games :p) I've been open and honest, but since Tira is also a RL player, I decided to go for the opportunistic approach here and know that at least 1 player would not be mad at me - btw, it's not so much lying, but more breaking an agreement when its conditions were no longer were in my favour - and of course, if I'm treacherous, I expect the same of my opponents :).

I must say, I was only strengthened in that idea being the right one for this game by the agreements my good inexperienced German neighbour tried to make with me :p

So in all honesty: yes, I played like a lying and cheating bastard. I was wondering where it would get me in online play. It definately works well when you control the timing, and I was able to do that in all of my stabs.
