If Kallors curse is keeping him going...

'Know this: you, Kallor Eiderann Tes'thesula, shall know mortal life unending. Mortal in the ravages of age, in the pain of wounds and the anguish of despair. In dreams brought to ruin. In love withered. In the shadow of Death's spectre, ever a threat to end what you will not relinquish.'

...then what was he using those candles for? I thought they added years to his life, but they are only mentioned once - why does he need them?

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

They stop him growing older. The curse means he's immortal, but his body will still age.

Whaa..? So if he doesn't burn them, he'll crumble up? What's he going to do now he's left them all behind in his tent?
I suppose he did just add another few hundred years, so he's got a bit of time to pick some more up from somewhere...
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I took it to mean he does need to use the candles, its just that he's doomed to use them forever. A means to an ends.
Its not like he's going to stop using them, just to stick it to the elder gods' curse.

in other words...why doesnt he just jump on his sword to "break the curse"...he will die, but the curse will be broken. :w00t:

The curse of Krull on Kallor is interesting: 'Know this: you, Kallor Eiderann Tes'thesula, shall know mortal life unending.' Could make a case that it was the curse that prevented Whiskeyjack from killing Kallor, and not Hood
or Cripple God.
This is not a thead starter just idle thoughts from idle mind

That's interesting, Wam. The reason Kallor is such a good swordsmen is more to do with his curse bending the rules of reality for him in that case. I like it.

Kallor is an amazing swordsmen as mentioned a lot of times, but maybe the curse does have some affect on some of the stuff that happens like wiskeyjack's leg.. That's how curses work right? Usually affect stuff indirectly.

The curses are busy all falling apart at the moment...doesnt really bode well for Kallor, or DOES it?
He wants power, maybe he will get it. Or he will just die, which in a sense is also breaking the curse.

It depends which curse breaks first I would say.
Mortal life unending breaks, and he still cant ascend, then he's got trouble.
If he ascends, and thus breaks the curse(it wouldnt be mortal life) then he'll be fine, I reckon.

Immortality isn't that big a problem for him. He knows all kinds of alchemical and magical means of staying his age. If nothing else he could probably turn himself soletaken. The empires a hundred thousand years ago had a lot more knowledge than the new ones.

There's a bit more on the candles in TTH - I didn't notice it on my first read, but

Spoiler

There were other factors involved regarding WJ's duel with Kallor, it's mentioned in passing during one of the later books, Bonehunters I think.
