Outside of people on this forum, I only know a handful of people who live in the states.

One friend and his family have already left because they are of Pakistani heritage and are afriad of what will happen to foreigners in the next few days.

Two of my other friends are white. One is a guy and he is just amazed at how things could have turned out this way. "It's like I'm an extra in Idiocracy." The other is a woman who had to leave her abusive American husband and is now unsure whether she is going to be able to stay or not since all of Trump's immigration rhetoric makes no clear sense to her.

Another is the daughter of our pastor. She was born in the States and lived there until 17 and moved back at 24. She's also shocked since she's a real Christian who can't believe a person who says such harmful things could become president. But more than that, her house mate is a Muslim woman. I don't know her but my friend has been trying to console her for hours because she is literally terrified about leaving the house in her hijab for work. Despite what fuckheads will tell you, she chooses to wear her hijab as a show of faith. She wants to wear it. It's a part of who she is. And now she is in turmoil because she feels she cannot wear it in public without risking her safety. This is a girl who lived in Tehran and now she is dealing with the same fear of strangers harming her because the leadership says it's okay.

It's fucking 2016 for crying out loud! How is this shit happening?

I genuinely feel sorry for these people who are experiencing this level of fear over an election. I am surprised that the Muslim girl is so afraid to go outside, I mean if she felt safe yesterday why is she so scared today? The people in her community, her coworkers, ect. are still the same people so if she has not experienced hate due to her hijab before today I don't know why she is in terror today. The people who support Trump supported him yesterday and the day before that so I feel bad that this woman is so terrified that because Trump won all the people in her community are suddenly going to turn into racist, hatemongers who go around terrorizing people. I am not saying there aren't some assholes out there but I am pretty sure most Americans are going to go about their day today the same way they have been for months. It seems a very illogical fear to assume that the election results are going to change people into monsters. I don't want to belittle anyone's feelings but I think people just need to take a deep breath and relax and realize that the world is not ending, your friends and neighbors are still the same people and Americans are not just going to rise up into vast mobs against all women and people of color.

I don't know her personally but I am aware that she has previously had to endure harassment from strangers during her work commute. And since Trump becoming President just helped to legitimise such behaviour for a lot of people, I think it's a completely rational fear to have. But I'm not a Muslim or person of colour so I can only guess at the daily crap they have to deal with from bigots and arseholes.

You might want to speak to some Polish people living in the UK after the Brexit vote. The problem is that there is going to be a small minority who will suddenly feel empowered to say and do things that they previously may have been hesitant to openly voice. It is easy to tell someone not be afraid if you are not in their situation. Warranted or not, I am sure for her the fear can be very real.
