There is such a device as a washer-drier. It takes up exactly the same space as a washing machine and because it condenses there is no need for vents etc it just goes down the machine waste. The only time I've ever seen one of these was in our StayDublin apartment rental in Dublin. It worked like a charm, but I've never seen one anywhere else. It is weird that you don't see more of them to be honest.
