What the fuck is wrong with you?

You want to hop about talking about how white lies are evil and that I hate all women? Go ahead.

A girl who is asking someone to accompany her as a dead last resort is not telling herself the truth - that she believes she is going to be alone at this event and does not want to face that. AIJ leaving early, despite escorting her there and having a great time with everyone, triggers that fear and thus the drama. Either that or she likes him and isn't willing to admit it to him.

Since AIJ is a friend, he is stepping in to accompany her. If he wants to leave and she's well situated with rides home and so on, I see zero problem in that. If he's getting laid, then sticking around and going camping with the crew would be a nice idea, but he's not. This is a straight up friend/friend deal and thus leaving early isn't a problem. He's brought the girl, gotten over the early event jitters, she's probably talking with friends, dancing and whatnot. She's fine. She isn't alone anymore. He can leave.

Now how to leave early - to disappear without notice? No. To say "I'm going to So and So's party"? Workable, but probably not the best for a teenage girl to hear because she'll translate it into "I'm leaving you alone because So and So is awesome and you're not." Better to say "I have a curfew," or "I've been called away by a family thing." There's a reason people use it all the time in shitty tv and movies - because the white lie works. It lets something external to the party and to your date carry the blame of separation and prevents emotions from boiling over in an entirely avoidable way.

Loki, I fully understand that this formal is the high school prom. There's college proms, graduate school proms and so on. The best formal event I ever attended was my law school's 2011 prom. The biggest difference between the high school formals and all the others is the amount of bullshit teenage girls put on its importance and impact. Everyone still gets dressed up nice, hair gets "did" at hair salons, corsages come out, limos are gotten, outfits are chosen and re-chosen and so on. The drama is what cuts out and if a high school kid is smart, he goes along to a certain extent and then either white lies or avoids certain situations to lessen the drama.

The biggest mistake in all this is AIJ letting the two find out about each other in a way that caused them both to get pissed off. There could have been more diplomatic ways to inform the girls. Oh well, can't cry over spilled milk and backing down to doing just one event is going to leave him less happy than attending both events would. I don't see the use in backing down at all here, so fire away if you like.

There you go. Resume with the "amphibian hates all women" logic. It's easy enough for you to remember and to ignore reality with.

I've only ever been to one "Formal" event (outside of weddings), and that was my high school formal. This is not uncommon in Australia. University formal / prom? NOPE. Graduation ceremonies, yes, but you wear your stupid academic robe and it's something you only get to invite one, maybe two people to, so guess what, your parents are going!

What is this about "so many future formals that will be way better"? Where do you live that parties of such significance are commonplace?

Exactly.

I have never been to these "college proms." Graduation ceremonies are obviously not the same thing, you wear your traditional but unflattering cap and gown for those. It's not a big formal party. The only reason I ever wore my tux after prom was because I was in one of my university's musical ensembles. Well, I also went on a date to the ballet in it much later, but still. My girlfriend's prom was the last such event that I've been to.

I don't think I'm in a wildly different economic class than you, so this must be a cultural/professional thing.

My undergrad college (Boston, US) had at least two or three formals every year - some were club or sport-specific though. My graduate school (upstate NY, US) had two formals every year - the prom and a big fundraising "legacy" event.

What about attending weddings, bar mitzvahs, bratabandhas, fundraisers or things like fancy shmancy operas/ballets where you're in the front row, bridal/groom's party or the one giving a speech and so on? None of that? Jeez.

I've used my tux multiple times in the last couple years and my suits/sportcoat much more as well.

There you go. Resume with the "amphibian hates all women" logic. It's easy enough for you to remember and to ignore reality with.

It's telling that the binary choice for you to say whether staying with the friend at the prom is worth it enjoyment wise is whether or not he'll get laid later. Clearly no-one can hang out with their female friend without sex! THAT WOULDN'T BE MANLY. You have shitty opinions about women.

Facebook exists. These friends would learn of what events occured on the same day, and who was at both. AIJ's lies would be revealed and both would hate him, rightfully, for lying to them. You don't see a problem with lying to them to their detriment. You have shitty opinions about women.

You don't hate women. You just feel their views are worthless because they're tainted by emotional responses, hence you ignoring them not because of their content, but because of their source. You have shitty opinions about women.

I guess what I'm getting at here is that you're a pretty shitty person when it comes to gender politics.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'm going to throw out another point of veiw.
Everyone involved is over reacting.
Both rl people and forumites.
Illy, you know I love you, you are going way over the top on amph, whilst I normally enjoy your indignant rants you really need to climb down off the white pony, armour does not become you good sir.
As for the while situation, its a formal for crying out loud, not her wedding.
AIJ's biggest mistake wasn't lettinx find out about y, it was not telling them to catch a grip immeadiately. Had he been dating both then yes there is a problem, he did a favour for a friend, had other shit to do, he did both. Story ends here.

High school formal wasn't that great, I mean it was good craic but its a load of crap getting stuff organised for it, club dinner dances and formals are so much more fun

How does misconstruing what I say in an intermittently all caps, completely non-logical and non-coherent manner get you three rep points? Oh, it's because you've hit upon the magic meme of me hating women.

Never mind that at least three of my posts about this subject are in response to those by a male forumite. No, the meme says I only disagree with women. Don't worry about all the times I've supported or recognized achievements by forumites and people of all ages, genders and approaches to life. No, the meme says I think women can't accomplish anything. Toss out the window any possibility of me viewing friendship as an immensely valuable relationship that can exist separately from or even within romantic ones. No, the meme says I view women as dumb tools for fucking.

You can climb off your high horse and go back to your "I'm going to make myself feel good by ranting incoherently and with great gusto" all caps with the calm that calling me a misogynistic shithead achieved.

Macros has the right of it. There's a certain amount of shit you put up with in real life and on the forums and once it goes past that, exit stage left as you tell the shit-spewers what they're up to.

Adios.
