Good Old Games

This is the service I've been waiting for for years. All of the best games from the last 15 years available from a steam-like service, and DRM free!! Back them up on a cd or whatever. Plus everything has pdf manuals and is fully compatible with windows XP and vista.

Just based on the titles from the intro site (link above) they are going to have a few killers on the block, and it looks like they know what they're doing.

Personally can't wait for this service to come out. I'll definitely be signing up and trying it out. It will be nice if they get a lot of companies on track with this to get a truly comprehensive list a la "the-underdogs.com"

Anybody else planning to check this out?

If someone tells me that they have Xcom Apocalypse that can run on XP, I'm there. I know that its not the best in the series, but I loved it...a lot.

I'm sorry, but no XCOM game shall ever beat the original UFO
the bithplace of tactical shooters of all times, they never DID manage to recreate it well... okay, so that Czech company tried, and it was a decent attempt, but it wasn't the same...

True, but as I played apocalypse first and only recently managed to get a copy of UFO to work on my computer recently...I'm afraid I never bought it. I tried those other ufo games and they were pants...Things need to move forward. I'd still like the defend my base section, the research and development and checking landing sites and alien terror alerts. the whole UFO interception section needs revamping and apocalypse had the best format out of all the series...IMO

lol, Interception WAS weak. But everything else was awesome, esp how you had to hone your squads, get people to use specialty weapons...
I played "Aftermath" (the new one), but it wasn't the same at all. the improvement upon it -"Aftershock", supposedly comes the closes to the spirit of the original, but it's still nowhere even close.

there ya go buddy. All the xcom games, available on steam.

I haven't tried them for xp compatability, but I'd reckon they work fine if they're sold through steam.

yeah, steam is pretty tits for older stuff. I thought it was mainly for valve stuff and didnt' know it was a software distribution service of such a great scope.

It's cool too because you can always access your games on any computer with it. The games are purchased on your account, not on your particular computer so if you're at home for xmas and get a hankerin' for some xcom then you just install steam and download it there at no extra charge.

and sorry, I'm not a girl...so no love from this end

The "Good old Games" service (thread topic) looks like it stretches a bit farther back than steam though...into some really classic stuff. Cheap downloads too.

Well that looks almost too good to be true, we'll have to see what the catch is (there HAS to be a catch somewhere).

I'd like to see a list of games though.

QUOTE (Stalker @ Jan 23 2009, 01:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

Im pretty sure there is a mac version of colonization somewhere...but gods know where I saw it...

Using dosbox for mac should make it work...probably...

Check here for using dosbox to run it on mac

Pretty far down on the page it also hints that there should be a mac version...

I'm looking for a Xenon 2 that will run on my mac, but alas. Nothing yet. Lode Runner would do well too.

OK, I haven't looked too closely at the selection but they have this site up and running now. Look at the first post for details, but basically DRM free games of the nostalgic persuasion from a service other than steam.

You actually buy the game and own it with no extra "must be connected to the internet to play" bullshit.

Must have a good look at their catalogue. Most stuff I've seen so far is available for under $10

EDIT: on a closer look, it appears that they don't have a very big selection yet. Oh well, I'm sure they'll attract more business once they prove the concept. Hey, if you were a game developer and were told that a 15 year old game could still make you money, wouldn't you do it?
