In Deadhouse Gates, when Moby gets left behind in Tremorlor as the new 'Guardian', he runs into a suit of armor:

Deadhouse Gates, on Ch 20, said:

The bhok'aral watched the group ascend the stairs. A moment later there was a midnight flash from above, and they were gone. The creature listened carefully, cocking its tiny head, but there was no more sound from the chamber above.

It sat unmoving for a few more minutes, idly plucking at its own tail, then swung about and scampered into the hallway, coming to a stop before the suit of armour.

The massive, closed great helm tilted with a soft creak, and a ragged voice came from it. 'I am pleased my solitude is at an end, little one. Tremorlor welcomes you with all its heart... even if you have made a mess on the hallway floor.'

Later, when Fiddler, Apsalar, Crokus et al arrive in the Deadhouse, they walk past a suit of armour:

Deadhouse Gates, on CH 23, said:

As at Tremorlor, a massive suit of armour filled an alcove halfway down the hall's length, and this one had seen serious battle.

The group paused to regard it briefly, in silence, before continuing on to the opened doors.

So it looks like each Azath house has a suit of armor as its "Guardian"... lets call this the Battle Guardian, since a suit of armor can obviously not serve tea and cakes!

Moby's role is also that of a guardian, but I would call it the Butler Guardian. This is also the role that Raest seems to be fulfilling in Finnest House and a Jaghut (Jhenna?) was fulfilling in the Deadhouse before she got taken out on the night of knives. We may assume Gothos fills this role for the Deadhouse - the Azath seem to prefer Jaghut for this role, but in the case of Tremorlor settled for a bhok'aral...

Besides the Battle Guardian and the Butler Guardian, the Deadhouse has one or two Watchmen Guardians as well, who don't reside in the Azath, but who keep a handle on things in their vicinity. These were the two people (I forget their names) who handed over their role to Temper. This may well be an exceptional case since Malaz City has such a happening nightlife.

So yeah, its raining guardians... Battle, Butler, Watchmen

That's quite a theory you've got there.

I seem to recall though, someone noticing an armor like the one that adresses the monkey, that isn't animated... I'm not sure that the armor that talks isn't a special guardian, a powerfull soul that lives in the armor.

I thought that was Temper?

Gothos isn't the guradian of the deadhouse. From what I remember, he in fact has nothing to do with the Deadhouse specifically. He lived in Tremorlor (where Icarium tried to rescue him from, and all that).

Yes, but he met Fiddler and Apsalar in the Deadhouse. So one can assume he moves around a bit

The Azath is a good place to live if you want to move around :)

That's a question that's almost impossible to answer without spoilers. Urm... try searching for topics, there are plenty out there:)

I've read all the SE books up to date (RG), I just can't seem to remember where he came back up...unless you're talking about sometime in the future of the series then I don't want to hear about it...

BTW, when to expect Toll the Hounds? Amazon has the release at September but I'm assuming that's the US release sicne they still have RG at May.

Just a note of caution. If anyone has an old, beat-up copy of NOK and is
considering replacing it - don't. The prices for this book are outrageous. I tried to replace mine via Amazan, Canada, Uke and Usa; Ebay, Yahoo, Tor and
Barnes and Nobles. The prices asked are insane. Worst was Barnes and Nobles
who had only one used copy, asking price $199.44. Didn't buy it

What the hell is with this book? Is it a collectible?

Only so many copies were made originally. I haven't had that problem though, I bought my copy in a store a couple of weeks ago for around 15 pounds.

Aye, the original editions were limited, and entirely sold out, so you'd expect them to be fairly expensive, but the mass-released edition shouldn't be that expensive, certainly. Try replacing it by going into like... a real shop - they might have copies in stock if you're lucky. There's an MMPB being released in May though - you could wait for that.

Or, of course, get one of PSpublishings repeat print-run. It's not signed, but it's only ?15. http://store.pspublishing.co.uk/acatalog/n..._knives_pb.html

Consider yourselves lucky that you can actually go to a store and FIND a new SE or Esslemont book, Over here in the states I have to import the damn things and it's usually outrageously expensive... I think I paid $42 for NoK.

I waited patiently and got my copy for about ?15 too, but Im trying not to read it too often to preserve it's condition, as most of my other MBotF books are now battered after many re-reads and trips to distant places, and I may have to replace them, despite my emotional attatchment to my originals.

Plus I want to get SE to sign my copy of NoK, just as an ironically strange twist.

Ok so I just read through Night of Knives and, as is typical with Malaz, it seems like it raised more new questions than it gave answers.

Specifically, now Temper is guardian of the Deadhouse. I thought that in DG the guardian of the Deadhouse was Gothos? Is there more than one? I know the Azath tend to trap many powerful ascendants but I would think the guardian role would only be filled by one person.

Thats all I can come up with right now because I literally just finished reading the book and now have to run to work (I'm already 15 minutes late). Thanks in advance.

Gothos made a deal with an Azath, most likely the one that existed before? Tremolo. The Azaths are interconnected and as such if you're inside one of them you can move to another one with ease.

Gothos probably isn't a guardian, rather a voluntary prisoner or perhaps just a guest... Who knows what the Azath make of Gothos and his power.

There's two guardians of the Deadhouse, the one we see pick up Kalam in BH and Temper.
