The only way to get it was order through the net as there were too few for sale. There probably aint anyone left though, but you can try.

Posted Image I love that film...

re: the patronship.. made me think of mortal sword initially..
I also remembered that one of QB's souls had a sword described as "blazing with the blessing of some unknown ascendant".

Sounds very cool Hetan, thanks for that.

In fact there is quite a lot on Dassem Ultor and it's going to revive the entire Dassem = Traveller debate again

How is Dassem's physique described?

The other characters like Temper etc, how are they described in terms of arms and armour, power etc.

Interesting about the Jaghut trying to escape from the Azath, any more info on that, a name and motivation?

Who is this "Obo" then? Race, physical description, why would you consider him powerful?

Re-Crimson Guard; Skinner again. He seems to be truly top notch. Is he mage or warrior, or both? Anything on the Prince himself?

Any thoughts on who the new major character might be, the one haven't met yet but who will feature in TBH, according to Patch..?

Yes, their attack etc had that feel about them.

Did we know Tayschreen used to serve D'rek, the Worm of Autumn, before whoever he serves now? Or maybe he serves no one now but the Empire. Anyway, he mentions D'rek as his "old master", and seems to even have stood before him in some form. Which I guess is no surprise given his power.

This has been mentioned before.

I wonder if Shadowthrone truly doesn't know about whatever Edgewalker was talking about at the end, or if he does and doesn't care that he can't truly have the Throne of Shadow (as seems to be the case), as he and Cotillion have much more ambitious plans if hints are to be believed, and heading Shadowhouse is just a stepping stone. I guess the last person/thing to think they took the throne was a long, long time ago, as surely if it wasn't the House of Shadows would have kept appearing and disappearing in the Deck of Dragons and people wouldn't have expressed such surprise at the new house when Shadowthrone took over. Must have been before they could even remember.

Kellanved and Dancer don't know as much about their realm as they think... remember the excerpt with Apt and boy.... he could see things that Dancer couldn't...

quote:
I thought it was very amusing how Dancer got into the Deadhouse as fast as he could, but Kellanved stayed cool and looked around first. I'm not sure if that's a sign of his arrogance, insanity or a mixture of both, but it was good.

.. and I thought he was looking around to make sure there were no observers left... hence his trying to get Kiska to cross the wall into the house.. Posted Image

Korlat of Tayschren in MOI - This is High Tellas - the Warren of Fire - child of Tellan

It would seem his use of Tellas gives him access to Thyr too, if Thyr is a child of tellan also.

@ IH....

Have you any idea of timeline here? Posted Image
I was thinking about how this fits in with the prologue of GoTM - always a dodgy subject I know.

Well the sides facing each other isn't really clearcut... there’s kelanved dancer and the talons fighting lasseen and her claws. Temper, exmember of dassems sword fighting pretty much everybody, a group of ex-bridgeburners who are going for lasseen, the hounds and various shadow creatures creating havoc everywhere, tays who gets in a fight with soem shadow cult members, and well there’s a few others floating around...

And then there's the ice spectres assaulting the entire island, with tays and some other powerful figures opposing that, and then a jaghut trying to break out of the azath being opposed by everyone.

So yeah... no real clearcut sides there... chaos sums it up nicely I think

And the ice spectres... well that’s sort of complicated and not fully explained, there is a hint that they have somethign to do with the jaghut, and may I have been released accidentally by them, they have icelike powers, swim aroudn in the sea, they generally swim in the straits next to malaz isle and sink ships, but in the book they mount a full out assault on the isle of malaz possibly to free the trapped jaghut

this was the first time that we have met ferrule, but he may turn up later. someone earlier in this thread suggested that he may be banashar(a character from the bonehunters prologue).

however one of the captains on the chain of dogs was the son of someone in dassem's sword. chenned i think?

re: aragan- aragan is a character that erikson was going to include as a bit part in every book but couldnt place him in HoC so it died there. he was sorry's recruiting sargeant in GotM, a captain that kalam met in mock's hold in DG, and the ambassador at Coral in MoI. He was the soldier who accosted kiska's aunt during the prohibition on magery.

re: jhess- jhess in the queen of weaving, a minor ascendant and whenever is seen weaving or knitting, someone on this board wants to name tham as jhess

re: riders - i still think that the riders are trapped souls of jhagut. i dont think that they are alien to the realm, not in the same way as the crippled god and the jade statues.

re: fisherman - i like the idea of the fisherman being chem, that sounds right!

re: temper- i think that the guardianship part is confusing, temper was only a gatekeeper, with a temporary alliance with the nameless ones in the heat of the moment. he never entered the house. he is different to gothos and moby. btw moby replaced a dead forkrul assail who's body was found in tremorlor.

re: patronship - i think that patronship just means that they worships the god significant to their profession. for soldiers this is fener, togg, hood etc.

re: cultists - i'm pretty sure that the shadow cultist are all talons, maybe they turned into a shadow cult to copy their master's desires.

I'm not sure about Edgewalker being an Imass..he's not quite right is he? a Tiste sounds better as has been suggested...
I want to know why he is referred to as the Elder One..with a capital E
IIRC K'rul was referred to as Eldering One in GotM

I liked NoK, it was a bit stumbeling in the begining, but got better as it moved along.

The Dassem part was the best part, i've got to agree with that. Especially since it put Whiskeyjack's and thus Kallor's skill with a sword in a better perspective.

Also, I got the impression that Temper was the most competent fighter of in the sword. No matter his technique, he managed to hold of a champion assumed to be the better of all but Dassem. He dispatched an elite member of the claw in mocks hold with little difficulty. And most importantly, he stood his ground against a Jhagut tyrant (or so she seemed to me).
Also, Kiska i think it was, describes Temper as a huge man, and he is shown several times to hold an almost inhuman strenght.

Dassem being traveler fits even better now.
"What will you do?"
"Travel. Head West"
He just fits so nicely as Traveler.

Gothos can travel between Azaths, is it not then natural to asume that the other guradians can as well? If so the the female Jhagut could have come from any Azath.

As an end note, I think Ferrule is Barathol from the BH prologue. Ferrule is of Sethi heritage, Barathol is described as a tribesman from the south. Ferrule returned to his homeland, Barathol lives on the subcontinent. My knowledge of the timeline is not perfect yet 11 years does sound fairly right to me. Also, Ferrule is described as a man fond of close in fighting, more a brawler than a swordfighter. An axe would be the right weapon for such a man I think. And he also has a special helmet, just like Temper Posted Image

Kellanved 'annoyed' them by annexing Unta and ousting Price K'ass D'avore, who ruled there or was successor to the throne.

That's what i initially thought... but then we find that the d'avorans had rebelled previosuly and got beat by the untan royal house, and i think they were kicked of there lands then, u'd have thought kelvenned invading unta and defeating the royal house would have made them allies of a sort...

Perhaps the reason for the hatred is that kelvanned didn't return the land to them...

Corrin being tatersail... i don't think so, one we surely would have heard if tatersail had been in the BB's at any point, two tatersails first action in the service of the malazan empire was in the mouse, before Nok, after which she got shipped out... so i don't see her coming back to malaz so soon... plus corrin is a veteran, and you don't become a veteran in 6 months.

Good to see you've finally joined us Dakk Posted Image

I rather think that as one of Dassem Ultor's bodyguard and a member of The Sword he had more than moderate ability ....and although he would never have defeated the hound he managed to hold it off a while longer than most others would have.

I wouldn't say that temper is now the azath guardian, seeing as he left the house, I think that role belongs to either jhenna still or someone else will take the role at another time.

I agree that I don't think Temper will be the guardian.

As to tays knowing the power of osserc, he doesn't, osserc is just rumoured to be the most powerful of mages, and so he assumed that only the most powerful of mages would have been able to hold it off, as he didn't think he could./]

Not sure why Osserc is in this discussion as he doesn't feature in the book?.

[QUOTE]And the guy who was holding off the storm was supposedly a simple fisherman, not kelanved, that guy intrigues me more than anyone else in the book who was he, why was he so powerful?

Of course he wasn't Kellanved... where did that come from?

quote:
Oh and tays seems to have a similar description, save his eyes are completely different, he has sunken black eyes, whilst banaschar has flaming eyes as I recall.

umm.. dark, black ringed eyes for Artan..
"something odd about the eyes, something vaguely fevered" for Banaschar.
I still think it's the same guy. People who are fevered do have dark rings round their eyes.... Posted Image
