I wonder who will have the nerdiest Christmas haul this year. That's already a strong contender.

very happy with the gifts this year. Tons of clothes, some nice cologne and BOOKS

-Tractatus Logico Philosophicus by Wittgenstein
-What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets- Michael Sandel
-First as tragedy, then as farce- Zizek
-French Philosophy book from an unknown author, good find.

Time to bury myself in my books.

Well yesterday's Christmas dinner was my best yet. Really happy with how it turned out. Also found a copy of King's Dragon and the single-book 1400 page version of Way of Kings for a combined total of £8. Wheyyy.

Our new 4k tv makes everything look so incredible I'm going to have to watch all my blu-rays on it again.

Just watched the T-rex scene from JP with the surround cranked up - just awesome.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Someone in my house decided to treat himself to the same. He has just finished setting it up now and trying to decide which Bluray to watch first. I was hardly consulted so get to act like it's a frivolous expense while enjoying a brilliant new tv!

Boxing day. Wandering one of the City's biggest strip malls, no actual desire to buy anything, just seeing I anything catches my eye. Smirking at the incredible line-ups. Scoping out a few trinkets and gadgets that aren't on sale, so i'll grab them after my next paycheck when there's no crazy crowds.

Then randomly strolling into Canadian Tire and finding a nearly-deserted sports section and a size 5 soccer ball lying in the clearance rack. Under 10 bucks, and I now have a cheap practice ball. No more excuse not to practice my finishing.

Walking out with no line-up, catching the last bus back home before my transfer expires.

Small things all, but pleasant nonetheless.

Also, picked up The Aeronaut's Windlass for 30% off

I've just got an iron pyrites (fool's gold) sphere. Just the right size to hold. A simple tactile thing. Oh, and a kitten. Both sources of joy!

Fortunately someone in my house hinted before Christmas that maybe we could get a bigger tv.. so I took that as an opportunity! I didn't even know about 4k tvs until about two weeks ago - I have kind of avoided the issue of how much I actually spent but at the moment she's so impressed with it that I don't think she cares!

Someone did. His name is Brandon Sanderson. 75% of the book was about sucking on these while the other 25% was about people in ball gowns moping. It ruled pretty hard.

I got one in early November. It's ethically iffy but I've been known to use Wal-Mart's generous return policies to test drive tech. I didn't think I'd like the curved screen so I bought it first. Love at first view. But I'll warn you up front: they just scream "play games on me" so if you don't have a console already you'll probably be adding one to the purchase price of the tv. :p

I was gonna buy one but the store had theirs set on BBC America and the bright whites of their pasty flesh hurt my eyes too much. I barely made it to my car and had to wear two sets of shades to drive home.

The recent BBC emphasis of using anchorpeople of diverse backgrounds and appearance coincides nearly perfectly with the rise of higher resolution TV.

We watched a bit of Big Fat Quiz of the Year last night and the high res made Jimmy Carr genuinely look like an android. I'm wondering if tv makeup has had to get more aggressive with the rise of the ultra HD TV.

Should make watching and picking apart "<insert nation>'s Next Top Model" a lot more interesting (and cathartic) anyway.

The kitten is a Maine Coon and named Wobble.

The Fool's Gold sphere has no name, though I have taken to whispering 'Precious' whilst fondling it.
