Can't sleep. The link in Cause' Malazan Yank thread to the Chicago meet got me looking through UK BBQ and Manky Meetup threads. Good times, my cheeks hurt from looking at all the pics with me grinning so much. Such a good bunch of people, I really love this forum. Maybe some of my old muckers will come back one day. Gosh, it seems I really like a drink too, right?

I will forever remember the love handles on the face...

They are called buggers grips. I found that photo. It made me chuckle. A lot.

Hah. Yes that was an excellent time. We miss you up this end of the country!

Jealous! One of the most transcendent experiences of my life, seeing that in London... Really want to watch again...

There's still positive news out there to keep one's outlook hopeful.

Valentine's Day is a completely made up day by greeting's card companies. Don't believe the hype. Boycot boycot boycot.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

A day for lovers is nice. You don't have to fall into the commercial trappings. A day in, cooking a nice dinner and enjoying movies is a lovely way to spend some quality time.

Pro-Tip: If you want to have a romantic dinner at that popular restaurant, be sure to secure reservations well in advance, otherwise you're out of luck. Posted Image

Go any other night and actually enjoy yourself.

Fixed for accuracy.

Exactly that. Extortion and money-grabbing, this whole Valentine's Day business. If you really love someone, spare them the horror and just do something nice on a day that is actually meaningful to the both of you, not one that is pushed down your throats by cynical marketeers looking to make a profit on relationships.

Can I just be happy I'm going to have a nice evening with a great person please?

You don't have to buy into the commercial nonsense to use it as an excuse to do something nice together. The same way a whole host of other things can serve as an excuse any other day of the year.

Although, agreed with the above that I can't think of anything much worse than going out for a restaurant meal on the day.

Yup, I agree, you don't have to spend money and buy into hallmark day to have a nice wee day.

No! You can't show your true feelings unless you're worried about how much the bill will come to and accidentally putting your elbow of the soup of the lady on the table next to you who is definitely angling for her bored man to get down on one knee and make a scene for her...

Go ancient and get all Lupercalia with it - sacrifice a goat, dance naked around a bonfire and fornicate with whoever is nearby until you are out of breath and then start it all over again. And then just to make the contemporary gods happy, buy a Hallmark card dripping in sappy sentiments and a box of chocolates that only have one or two good types (with the rest being trash) and in a proper and timely manner, present those to your paramour.

By all means, always a great thing to do. It is the Valentine's Day link that I was commenting on, not the nice Friday evening with a loved one. Every time the day is mentioned, Hallmark reaps another orphan soul for the legions of Hell.

Fair enough, I didn't mean to jump down your throat. Think I'm just a little twitchy as the moment you mention you're doing something for it (before you have a chance to explain that something is not buying into the nonsense) a bunch of people seem to leap on you and tell you why it's terrible. Hello Facebook - yes I mean you.

It's also a long time since I've had anyone to spend it with, so I'm a little excited just in and of itself :)

No need to mollify, I clearly was being a bit of a self-rightious dick there in true internet warrior fashion. I stand by my Valentine's Day remark as I simply just find it a terrible commercial milking of human emotion, but it wasn't intended to come across as a slight on you or anyone else specifically for using the occasion as a way to celebrate a relationship. I should have made that a bit clearer. No snide remark intended, it was just a general observation which in retrospect probably was a bit misplaced.

Also, I just Wikipedia'd Valentine's Day and there is some bleeding historical background to it beyond Hallmark. Live and learn.

Still icky, though.

But the card I bought has a picture of a slice of pizza on it and says "You took a pizza my heart".
