Getting a lot of Dawkins/Gervais hate here.
I'll be honest, I was expecting Gervais negativity, but hating on Dawkins? Really?
Ah well.
Have you not read anything Dawkins has written or said in the last five years?
The Selfish Gene and God delusion. Though I'm pretty sure they are more than 5 years old.
As far as the things he says, yeah all the time, and while he may not be everyone's cup of tea, I tend to agree with a lot he says, even if I don't always agree with the way he says it.
Hence the original post.
But the guy is passionate. So what?
I suppose you're all going to take a pop at Christipher Hitchens too?
Would you agree with any of these? I don't think that even includes his 'I was molested as a child and I was fine, so it's not that big of a deal' quotes either. Fuck Dawkins.
As for Hitchens, he gets one extremely huge positive mark for volunteering to be waterboarded to show that it wasn't torture, actually going through with it, lasting about five seconds and immediately changing his mind to agree that it was in fact torture. Despite his warmongering asshole awfulness in every other aspect of his life, that means a lot. So no, he wasn't as bad as Dawkins.
And Gervais! I really wish that Stardust review I wrote where I wanted to recut the movie so it's seven hours long and 4 hours of it is the scene where the character Gervais plays gets stabbed to death loops while triumpant music and cheers play in the background wasn't lost somewhere.
Well as far as Gervais goes, I'm not even that fussed either.
Loved The Office, it's just great, and Extras is good too. But that's kind of it.
Don't like his stand up, that old peoples home thing that he done was awful and, as a rule, I generally bypass him.
The main reason I watched the video is because it involved the afore Hated Dawkins, which I admit, has said some shitty things now that I look for them. I don't believe he's always said such things though. And I've never proactively searched for "Horrible things Richard Dawkins has said."
When I was first introduced to him. I read God delusion and thought it was great. Since then, over the last few years, I've cherry picked videos to watch that feature things I want to hear about, I'm not necessarily watching the more recent/deplorable quotes. I don't follow Twitter so I'm not likely to see any nasty things that he puts on there.
I just think he's said some brilliant things in his career. On very important subjects.
I think, for me as a person, I can't hate him for saying stupid/ignorant/offending things in anger when his root position makes (made) a lot of sense to me.
He hates religion.
I'm not a particularly big fan either.
He's guilty of being offensive to religious practitioners, yes. He's also a scientist.
I like scientists.
But anyway, it was just a really good conversation that they were having, if you actually watched it. About how glorious life is. How perfectly improbable it is.
Douglas Adams' "puddle" theory about intelligent design, features. Which I just love.
As I agree with most people on this site when it comes to the things that matter most to me, I honestly thought it would be watchable to a majority. Gervais not withstanding of course.
I also agree with you Illy on most things too, so I'm not too fussed.
If liking Dawkins is my thing, then fair enough. I can live with that.
There's worse been defended on this site.
