So ahhh... they are trying to vote right now on the bill, which is against Texas constitution.

As far as I can tell this means anyone who votes can be recalled and removed from office, yes?

AUGH FUCK ME I HOPE YOU'RE RIGHT. I swear, it's WELL past midnight, they better not try any funny business.

They are claiming they did a vote at 11:59pm(CST) and the bill was passed. They claim to have voted using 1 finger for Aye and 2 for Nay.

I'm seeing different claims that they voted past midnight and said the "cheering disrupted the clock." ??? Either way, I believe Dems will move to appeal tomorrow.

UGH.

AP already declaring it over and SB5 passed ("Reporters and Democrats saw the voting begin after midnight, but Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said it began just before.") while Texas Tribune reporting that nothing is certain at the moment (http://www.texastrib...n-wan/#liveblog).

Yeah... and then there's the fact some didn't even know what they were voting on.

I mention that because the AP story is, obviously, spreading like wildfire and yet is beyond premature in its conclusions. That in itself isn't making me happy right now, but I'm fairly sure they're gonna have to walk a lot of it back...at least one Senator (Whitmire) claimed the vote timestamp was 12:02AM, and there's no way this isn't going to be challenged one way or another.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Record shows the vote was taken 6/26/2013: http://www.capitol.s...ss=831&Bill=SB5

Not necessarily the final word on the matter, but...

Sorry I liveblog'ed up this thread. A different thing that made me happy is my sister won free bowling + shoes for 90 minutes and we went yesterday with some friends, it was quite fun.

SB5 in Texas will shut down 47 of the 52 abortion clinics in the state, because their hallways are too narrow or they don't have every doctor on staff ALSO working at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic.

Its an attempt by the GOP to get around the Roe v Wade ruling and make abortions unable to happen without specifically outlawing it, which they cannot do since federal trumps state.

So the GOP majority in Texas' Congress called a special session that, according to the Texas Constitution, cannot go over into another day, which means they have to be done at 11:59pm, CST.

One democratic senator decided to filibuster the bill, which would make it essentially 'time out' so there wouldn't be a vote on it. She was warned once for leaning on a desk, once for having a fellow senator help her put a back brace on, and then she received her final warning which caused the end of the filibuster because the GOP Speaker decided that her talking about the 'morning after pill' was off-topic. At that point there was about 10 minutes left before the end of the session, and the public watching the session starting making so much noise nothing could be heard on the floor of the senate. The GOP claims they took a vote at 11:59pm, the 'official vote tally' reads 12:03am, they are currently in a special closed door meeting to decide if it was legal under Texas' constitution or not.

In slightly different news, the woman who created and pushed the bill also claimed that woman can't get pregnant when raped because 'hospitals have these things called rape kits that clean you out'. A real shining example of the GOP working hard for its constituants there.

This whole thing really illustrates the incredible stupidity of the American political system. Not even getting into the nature of the bill itself, but that one can be called on technicalities by the Speaker (who, being in theory unbiased, but in practice no doubt favours their own party) like leaning on a desk or getting help putting a back brace on because you are standing up for 13 hours straight never mind what is the most technical of "off-topic" calls to make...what the hell sort of a system is set up like this? :S

Generally they're a lot more lenient about the rules when it's a Republican doing it. Mostly because the Republicans are a bunch of vindictive evil fucks, as proven time and time again.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

'rape kits'.... i'm not sure what's more stunning... that she said this, or that she believed it in the first place.
...or maybe that no one in the GOP pre-emptively warned her.

Oh, wait... maybe they're smarter than i thought.... let the crazy champion the unpopular, then if it loses, blame it on crazy, and your anti-abortion constituents stay on board.

The two gay marriage cases before the Supreme Court got decided!

CA Prop 8 got the best smackdown possible - "you don't have any standing to even be before the court"

And DOMA got shot down by a fascinating coalition of justices.
