Grub's Father?

On pg. 854 of the US paperback, there is a scene where Gamet approaches the Whirlwind, hoping someone will come out of it and kill him.

Grub approaches and speaks with him, stating "Father has a new shiny ring. Around his arm. It's all carved. He's supposed to give more orders but he gives less."

Gamet thinks he's talking about Keneb, but the next page makes it clear it is not Keneb.

Who the heck is Grub's "father" he's speaking about? The only thing I could think of is Gruntle's arm Torc in MOI.

I looked through old forum posts and couldn't find an answer.

I'm pretty sure that he is referring to Keneb, all the references seem to point to keneb, save keneb saying that Grub has never spoken to him, but we've seen Grub do all sorts of strange things so his manner of telling keneb where Gamet is might not be the same as talking to him. That's the best I can come up with at any rate.

Also the whole shiny torc thing also ties in well with Kenebs new promotion.

This didn't stand out to me when I read it but it is interesting.

The post does make it sound like Gruntle. Keneb is his adopted father and got promoted so it seems to fit. The rings on the arm could be anything, and since Grub is on the Seven Cities continent how would Gruntel's son get there from Genabackis?

Malazan officers wear torques on their arms to denote their rank.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

When i read it, i also found it slightly odd. I think Erikson is doing a clever little trick that loads of other authors do, where they lead you into one assumption and then shatter it completely.
In the book it does say the Grub goes onto be the First Sword of the Empire, and i think his father, who at the moment remains a mystery, will turn out to be someone powerful and significant.
A river ever changes in time, but who marks out the new course?

If I remember correctly Gruntle's torcs were made out of ivory, so they wouldn't be shiny probably.
Looking for books that hold a candle to the Malazan series or the Shanara series. PM me if you can recommend one. :)

It's just the standard malazan torcs denoting officer ranks in the malaz military, you guys are waaaaay over-thinking this...

I guess when I read that passage I just assumed Grub was referring to Keneb but the line mentioning that Grub is to become the First Sword of the Late Empire period I thought was very interesting.

Hey SE doesn't make things easy. I doubt it will be a 2 + 2 equation. I will be a 2x - 7y / 13 = 2z thing you know. :p
