Haha! No sweep for the commies in gymnastics! What was up with that scoring by the way? Seemed very f'in random.

What is this stupid horse dancing? That's not a sport! What physical talent or athletic ability does this require?!?!?!?

Do you mean Dressage? It's a very technical discipline. Quite boring to watch but really good fun to do. It takes years and years to train a horse to Olympic dressage standard and the rider has to be very dedicated.

The reason it's part of the Equestrian Eventing competition is because for the first day of Dressage competition, you need the horse to be very disciplined and tidy with it's feet and respond to every tiny command. The second day is Cross Country which is lots of galloping and massive jumps so the horse has to be fit and strong and really brave and it has to trust the rider to put it in the right positions to do the jumps. The third day is Show Jumping which requires a lot of power and precision when the muscles are tired after the previous day. It's an exciting dangerous sport if you understand what you're watching! Eventing is brilliant because to get a horse that's good at all of it is a rare thing (and an expensive thing which is why it's full of toffs, but then so is sailing!).

EDIT - Oooh and Cougar's comments about the equestrianism being held in Hong Kong... It's due to quarantine laws. It was infeasible to get competition horses through China's quarantine laws. They're more relaxed in Hong Kong as they can move horses around for the regular racing there.

/horsey mode :)

Ok, So the second and third day will be more exciting, but the first day stuff was painful to watch. I appreciate it must be freaking hard to get a horse to do that kind of thing, but that doesn't make it interesting to watch. "Oh, look how smoothly he trots! And when he turned in a circle his hindquarters were like they were nailed in place! Wonderful!" Bah. Anyways, the horses should get a medal, not the rider.

Well, no! You missed the 3 Day Eventing (GB won team and individual bronze. USA were nowhere :)). I think you must have been moaning about the team Dressage competition, which is unfortunate as it is very dull, even when you know what to look out for. The team and individual Show Jumping is on over the weekend, that might be exciting although the course is rumoured to be a bit easy for the Olympics.

So, what is the summer olympic equivalent of the winter olympic's curling, a funny as hell sport to watch that nobody has ever heard of outside of those crazy Canadians eh?

I've heard things about Handball, but haven't been able to catch any yet.

Handball is fun to watch, I saw some of it. It really seems like a game your high school gym teacher made up though. I pillow polo next for the olympics?

Apparently there's a game like volleyball where you're only allowed to use your feet to kick the ball over the net. Not sure of the name, or if it's in the olympics or not.

Is that like a bar-crawl where you go from one to another?

Some of the events:
beer chugging
flip-cup (team game)
sink the bismarck
fastest shotgun...

@RLY: don't know if you've already figured this one out but they have won one.

Pub Golf, yes, you go to 18 different bars (if you have that many anyway) dressed up in cliche golf clothes and drink a different drink at each one. Mostly pints, but the hardest is a Double Strawpedo (don't ask)... it's insanely messy to drink. One point for each go you have at drinking it, lowest score wins. 18 is the lowest you can get, clearly.

Back to the Olympics, I'm currently watching the walking! It's utterly hilarious :)

I wouldn't be surprised what an olympic medal can do for one's sexual attractiveness.

Well duh, you tell her it was for fencing or something like that. If you have the medal I doubt she (who I'm hoping is drunk and unable to) will not do the research. I'm telling you, that is one hell of a fire-starter.

Drunk girl: "So, what do you do?"
Walker: "I'm an olympic athlete."
blah blah blah pointless pointless talking and flirting
Drunk girl: "So, lets go to your place so I can see the medal..."

AND... home made porn.

Dammit! I should have known better than to come to this thread. I've been spoiled on the Phelps race with no one to blame but myself. Stoopid tape delay.
