My name is Adjutant Stormy, and I am a pirate.

Ii really feel no guilt about this, I pay for games when I can. But seriously, I won't pay twice the price for a new game, when two months later it's dropped to half price.

I know people who make games, hell there are two programmers in my family, and they really don't see that money. The "artist" argument really doesn't apply.
For me, it's also tough paying a week's food budget for a game I will end up finishing in a weekend.

Limited bandwidth = limited piracy.

Music only, really.

Good, good. I was thinking we were a limited breed around these parts and was starting to feel a little bad (not really).

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

I Pirate.

I buy what I like. And only download stuff I'm interested in discovering, with the intention of buying later should I like it.
If I like it I buy, the artist lost nothing, it's more like credit, they get their sale. Infact the capacity to sample the whole thing before buying increases my chances to purchase. If I don't like what I've dl then chances are I won't be listening to it, which means yet again that the artist doesn't lose anything, and maybe six months later if I really haven't listened to it I just purge it from my drive since it's a waste of space. Basicly it's like a 6 month trial.

Also, unless I'm horribly mistaken I haven't heard many artist other than Metallica make such a huge case about this. Usually it's the record companies that complain.

From what I've seen on this thread most people who dl also buy if they like, and most of my friends also operate like this. This turns piracy into more of a large advertising platform. Infact since filesharing has appeared I've become more aware of smaller bands. Before record companies like any big market didn't like taking risks on small bands, which means you only heard about big bands. With the advent of p2p these bands got free publicity and exposure. With hits on their sites they break out and suddenly labels will be interested in them.
As much as there are negative aspects to file sharing there is a distinct positive side.

I pirate whatever, I don't really care. I have a finitive amount of money, which I use for luxery goods like music, movies and games.

Seriously though, in my case piracy doesn't affect how much money I'll spend at all. I download music of artists, and when I like that music I will spend money on getting the album. Same with games, same with movies. I download tv series cos they don't show them in Holland untill they're 2 years old. So what's better? I wouldnt buy that series anyway.. I'd either watch it online or wait 2 years and watch it on tv.

Hell, if I could I would even download RotCG, I won't have the money to buy this book for another week and then I will, but I really want to read it, so is it wrong to download it now and buy it in 2 weeks? I don't have any moral issues with it, the only reason I don't is cos I don't wanna read it on a screen.

Yepp...piracy ftw...

Why..?

Simple things like games/music/even books are quite expensive...for a student like me its a impossibility to buy even a fraction of the ones who are interesting so that fraction is reserved for things that are good not just might be good.

As for most people I guess the amount spent on entertainment (games/music/books) is finite I spend it and don't spend less because of piracy, I spend as much as can be afforded...

I was doing my books this week, And I spent about 15+ Grand on games, books, and DVDs.

There should be support groups for people like me, since last year I also downloaded over 60 gigs a month of pirated things. I have a problem.

I only download free music when I can't find it on I-tunes. I am generally against stealing, even if it is off the internet

The argument depends on what exact piracy you are talking about, and even then it varies wildly with the situation.

For instance, in the case of music from big-label record companies, the artist makes maybe a quarter off every album sold--the rest goes to pay production costs or into the executives' pockets. If I want to support the artist, I go to their concerts and live performances.

For movies, my logic is that if I paid to see it in theaters ($10, which is generally the same as the dvd, but I'm not sure since I haven't bought a dvd in ages) then why should I pay to own the dvd? Generally, half the movies I pirate I wouldn't see otherwise, so when I talk about it to my friends I'm essentially giving them free marketing.

Most programs/apps that are good are freeware; the few that aren't are retardedly overpriced (several hundred dollars for photoshop, for example). Anyone short of a professional working in said field cannot afford to buy them.

As for games, that's generally the only situation I try NOT to pirate, in part because multiplayer is worthless when you pirate. But they're just so damn expensive, especially for someone without a job.

For an explanation about the whole "money" logic:
I paid $20 for Counter-strike: Source off Steam. I've played it upwards of 500 hours over the past year or so. So, going by those numbers, I'm getting 25 hours of quality (albeit rage-filled) entertainment per $1. For a movie I go to a theater for, I paid $10 to get in for 2 hours of entertainment...that's 12 minutes of entertainment per $1. Why should I have to pay for the DVD when I already paid to watch it in theaters, an experience that is 125 times worse in terms of cost:time of fun.

Hell, even some of us that are in said field can't afford them

Agreed. Although not really because of multiplayer, I just actually respect game developers.
